I made a bokken. Idea was to make a bokken with identical characteristics with my katana. Identical tsuka length, blade length, POB, COB and curvature. Of course the weight isn't the same. It's made of ash wood. Surface is treated with strong wood glue then sanded and finally treated with carnauba wax. I didn't finish it too carefully because it will get dents anyway. I used a saw, axe and files to carve the bokken. Here's pictures: What do you think? Thanks.

Thank you Bryan and Krelian! Here's a couple more pictures of the bokken and my "katana" side by side:

probably not as its ash wood like mine and I'm waaaaay faster with my bokken than my katana and thats no good for training / real use.. I threw my katana twice when I first got it as I wasn't use to the weight and didn't hold on tight enough.. thats why I bought 2 of the same sword but like musashi the bokken is a dangerous weapon in the right hands.

Now that I have practiced more with this bokken, I think it's probably not the best idea to make the POB match katana exactly. Because the bokken is so much lighter it would be probably better if POB was a little bit closer to the tip. I have a high quality japanese murasaki bokken and its POB is pretty far (probably a little bit less than an inch further than in same sized katana) from tsuba. This bokken that I made feels maybe too effortless and simple to swing. Overall feel (despite the light weight) is surprisingly similar to my katana. I think it was an interesting project to try this out and maybe this bokken will fit some aspect of training. I'll show this bokken to my kenjutsu teacher and ask his opinnion. I started practicing bujinkan budo taijutsu this fall so I finally get proper katana training.

Either way man you made a great looking bokken and should be proud of it! Unless you drill holes and glue some bolts/nuts into the wood to make it the same balance / weight.. ( I thought about doing that ) but… the bokken is it's own weapon and training as you can do more with a bokken than a real blade, i.e.; I have use it like a short bo in training before and the hooks to legs and lock ups that can be done makes me respect musashi so much more for winning all those battles with a wooden oar carved out to a blunt tip sword. I wish they didn't teach with a bokken for sword training because as its similar in function it is completely different in reality.
