So what actually brings this up is that not too long ago a friend of my wife and I passed away and while we were at his house for a rememberance/wake his husband takes me down to the basement where a youth sized bow made from 1/2" pvc and some nylon string sits with my son's name on it. (The couple was my son's godfathers.)
Anyway, the bow promted my son to ask me to start teaching his 9 year old butt some archery. My stepdaughter then states she wants to learn as well. Now, I started practicing with a fiberglass longbow when I was about 8 so the kids are old enough. However, we only have the single bow. In this case it really is just a piece of pvc and some string, with a bit of pipe insulation for a handle.
Being on my usual finances in the negative numbers budget it looks like pvc bows all around. Now, I think I can do better than the one made for my son by going the fiberglass rod / 3/4" pvc route with some tennis tape for the grip, actual bow strings, finishing nail or wood screw arrow rests, and some rubber grommets for the end of the tubes around the fiberglass.
What I'm not entirely sure about is the sizing. If I go by the arm span divided by 2.5 calculation for draw length then my son is a 20" draw, my stepdaughter a 24" draw, and I'm a 28" draw for 50-60# pull. If I go by the chart here: www.learn-archery.com/proper-bow-size.html then my son would get a 54" bow (slightly taller than him), my stepdaughter about a 62" bow, and I would take about a 66-68" bow. Strings would be app 4-6" shorter than the bow. This seems just a bit large to me, and since I haven't touched a bow in over two decades I'm open to suggestions.
