First, since this is a prototype katana and may possibly see changes before production, this is not the standard template review. I did not pay for this sword and am not being compensated in any way for this. This is being done for Blake and this community. A post was made awhile back about this new series and several members made comments and asked questions.I spoke to Blake(bpogue)from CAS/Hanwei about the sword and it was decided that I would hard target test the blade on mature bamboo that was cut and left to dry abit before testing, none of this is fresh bamboo. There is no fancy cutting here, just the basics. The video shows just a small amount of the bamboo I cut with this sword, and the video is still over 20 minutes long.I hope you enjoy and find the video helpful. A huge thanks to my buddy Scott(skane)for editing the video.I hope to have an actual camera for the next one buddy, hahaha. ... ata_playerMy thoughts ... ata_playerI enjoyed using and testing this sword from Hanwei. It handled very well and cut very nicely, even as is it would serve you vety well against bottles, tatami and average fresh cut bamboo imo.

Great looking sword, and your skills at cutting aged bamboo are top notch as well. Looks like Hanwei has a great heavy cutter on their hands. You mentioned in the vid that it kind of has an XL thickness to it while being wider - how do you think that changes things when it comes to handling?

Hi Luis! Thickness is similar to the XL series, but blade width is traditional, similar to the practical plus blade. It handles great.

Nice job on both videos! +1 from me. I absolutely love that tsuba! Not a fan of the length that much or the practical line Ito and samegawa. Like that they've taken steps to give their tsukas more shape and upped the saya build. Three of my biggest complaints regarding my old Practical Katana was the Ito, samegawa, tsuka shape and saya fit. Seems they're going in the right direction with this line. With a few tweaks this line like real samegawa panels and a cotton wrap, this line could put Hanwei back on the map as the go to for performance dojo katana.

Its a little longer in the blade and tsuka for my tastes. I think the nicest so far of Hanwei tsuka Ive handled is my 25th Anniversary shinto. It is good to see they have some shaping in this one. Good cutting too, even those 3 in a row of one handed cuts

Hey John,
Really appreciate the time taken to do the test cutting and giving your feedback on the sword. Also thanks to Scott for helping out with the video editing.
I mentioned to John before that I've brought up the edge thinness at the kissaki with Hanwei and we'll see if we can't get a more robust edge there for the production swords.
Thanks again everyone for the comments, Blake

To be clear, the amount of damage the kissake took was very minimal, almost unnoticable.Ive seen more robust edges take much worse damage on fresh bamboo.

Great vid as usual John. I really like the fittings and overall aesthetics of this new line from Hanwei, its definately a step up in theyre tsuka. Shame its not quite as durable as the raptor but judging from the thinner geometry, its seems they wanted to keep weight down. Looks like it didnt have any problem sailing through that bamboo though. Its obviously designed to be a faster sword than the raptor but keep most of that durability, and it seems like Hanwei admirably accomplished this goal. Thanks for taking the time out to make another great vid that really tells us a lot of information about a brand new product.
