Hi, I'm Flint, and I'm a blade junkie...[/bad 12 step joke]
OK, now that that's over, as you can probably guess, my name's not really Flint, but it'll do for this forum. I've always loved blades-knives, swords, axes, spears, you name it. Actually, weapons in general-guns,blades, missiles...I've found you can learn a lot about a civilization by the way they fight, and by the reasons they go to war in the first place.
Anyway, I've owned quite a few knives over the years, and a couple of wall-hanger swords. Now that I'm actually getting some real training, I'm ready for something battle-worthy, and just maybe, to try making my own blades, so I find myself here, doing research.
I've been lurking here for about a month, reading everything I can find, and you folks are without a doubt the friendliest, most noob-tolerant bunch of people I've ever encountered on the 'net. I'll be lurking for a while longer, as I want to answer as many of my own questions as possible before I start pestering anyone with annoying rookie queries.
Thanks for doing what y'all do, and I look forward to spending many, many hours on this forum.

Welcome aboard Flint! How's Tas? Still being a doorknob of a kender? You've probably guessed that Dragonlance was and still is one of my favorite series of fantasy novels.

That lamebrained doorknob's still causing trouble, like usual. Nice to meet another fan :-) I actually got Margaret and Tracy's autographs at GenCon a few years back. THAT was a great day!

Fantastic! Glad you were able to do that. My brother and I (combined) own all of their original novels along with the Death Gate Cycle. Truly great writers. Anyway, hope you have a great time on the forum.

Well, you asked for it lol
First noob question: As I mentioned, I'd like to learn to make battle-worthy blades. As such, I've acquired an old file I plan to use to start learning skills like edge bevels and distal tapers, tangs and guards, etc. I will not be heat-treating it, just grinding a distal taper, edge bevels, and tang, so the type of steel/whether it's heat-treatable isn't an issue.
The question is: I understand that, when designing a dagger with a guard, the tang needs 'shoulders' on the sides (edges) to help hold the guard in place, sandwiched between the blade and grip. Would it be necessary to have shoulders on the flats as well, or no?

Hello, There is a sword making and customizing section here in the forum that should be able to handle these types of inquiries. Welcome aboard, from another way back Dragonlance fan.

It's called Close Quarters Combat. Essentially, it's a combination of Kali/Escrima and Wing Chun, with some crunchy bits from a few other styles thrown in for good measure. I started my first lesson with weapons in my hands (machetes and fixed blade knives). The style uses basically the same techniques armed and unarmed.
