Adrian is spot on. Unless you actually have a sensei that can give you recommendations, go with something neutral. 26" to 28" inches is stock common for katana and a good place to start. The one thing to watch for in the longer blades is the chance of hitting the ground. If you have long arms, and a long blade, there is a chance of catching the tip on the ground. Thats bad. I am 6'4", and I have katanas in the 28" to 33" range. I like the bigger blades, but the 33" inch o-katana do take a bit more awareness. I rolled the tip on one of them unintentionally just brushing the ground. Go with the 29" or 30" inch, that should be plenty long. So it is being too long to the point of hitting the ground that is the main issue, correct? I suppose you would then error on shorter vs longer. And that length would generally be a bit longer than historical Japanese averages due to smaller stature of men on that Island hundreds of years ago.

No it does not. If you don't have a tradition or a teacher telling you what to use, you can use anything you like. I was told that the ideal length for me is one that just barely clears the floor if my arm hangs at my side and I hold the sword with a loose grip. I can also use a sword that's almost half a foot longer than my "ideal".
If you have to use a certain thing then do so. If you can get away with anything, try many different swords and see what you like. Don't get caught up in assumptions - what you think you want might not be the case after you've had a chance to find out for yourself.
The best situation is where you are told to use something you'd want to use anyway. Best to be in accordance.

What should the width and height of a blade about 78 cm long be?
