SBG Bowie Knife Special Project Silent Auction It's time for a special SBG event, and an opportunity to own a great knife put together by a collaboration of two beloved craftsmen here on SBG : Fallen & San Marc. A while back forum M&V account holder L. Driggers approached me and told me he had an idea to help provide a little support for SBG. He mentioned that he was making a bowie blade , and that he would like to donate it to SBG , to have other SBG member craftsmen to complete the work and then the knife be sold to benefit SBG. Well to me this sounded like a great idea. Fallen actually ended up donating two blades , and big ones they are too. In my search for the perfect craftsman to complete the knives , I approached faithful SBG member and smith , Marc Sanford , of San Marc Forge. Marc agreed to do the work and I think he did some stellar work. I was going to approach Sarge about doing a couple of sheaths , but as many of you know he is heading out to the sand box... so if anyone wants to volunteer to do that , then pipe up , either here , or by PM. If not the knives will go as they are. The first knife to be auctioned is a real beaut. I believe Fallen and San Marc have captured the essence of the rugged Arkansas fighting knives. Blade is about 13 inches, making this a real beast of a bowie. Auction rules are as follows : Bidders will PM their secret bids to me . Auction will last 48 hours or until we meet our secret "goal bid" . The highest bidder , or the one to first bid at or above the goal amount takes home the blade. SBGers who are not in a position to bid, but would still like to support SBG may contact me about possibilities ... I will have to clear this will Paul , but small donations may be accepted. OK folks , this help SBG and Bid on a Bowie

Yes it's a big one it would have no problem cleaving a man's skull. Thickness blade I've ever did at 3/8in, took a long time to do.
If this works out well I will team up and do it agian to suppost SBG.

Sadly I don't have much $ for such a purchase at this moment. Are there going to be other auctions? Or is this a one time thing?

What? no bids yet? Well I can't afford much at the moment, but I will send a ridiculous low bid to at least have this started.

Well there is at least one bid in, and I will be disappointed if I win with my bid. This isn't about the knife, which is damn cool, but about helping the site.

Going to extend this through Friday at 8pm to give others a chance to see / bid. Very disappointing response so far , surely my fault in the execution.
OK folks ... Friday at 8 PM ...

maybe posting in the classifieds would get more views - I expect that many members subscribe to the classifieds & would receive a notice of a new post. I'd post on the main page of it and the actual items for sale page.

Marc, Big bowies are primarily a niche market item; and, if one isn't into them, even the best example for the best cause won't garner much attention. All you can do at this point is give it time & exposure and hope people join in.
I commend you and the craftsmen involved for your efforts, and hope the final result is not disappointment for any of you.

Paul is in general against taking donations. So this auction is a way for folks who want to support SBG to do so without it being a donation. If you don't like the knife, but like SBG. You can always give the knife away later, or just use it as a paper weight. This is why the last fund raiser was selling the t-shirts and more than a few SBG members bought more than one. So they could help support the forum they love. Or maybe it was they hate laundry or a mix of the two My point is that while the knife is a cool thing to get, the point of the auction is not to get the knife. It is to help support the site. Sadly I don't have a lot of money I can spend right now. Or I would have put in a much higher bid than the knife is actually worth. I was a bit embarrassed to submit the low bid I did and it is not even likely the value of the knife materials. But hey I love SBG and could not stand the idea of no bids having been made and I could at least afford that much so submitted it.

Unfortunately all my spare cash is being swallowed at a geometric rate by my new house .The bowie looks extremely bad ass and I hope someone comes in with a fitting bid for this beauty.

Well, hh said it, this is a niche market....happens to be my niche. I tossed in a paltry bid; an insult really but it's all I can afford atm. Hey Marc, maybe for the next blade we could have a bit of forum participation while the blade is being hilted? Might get us a little more awareness before the actual auction. C'mon guys, let's get the bids going!!!!

Sorry for the double post, but another problem is that this thread doesn't show up on the main board after someone posts for some reason....

would you give us some more details on the knife; type of steel, wood etc. Thanks

From what I can remember the steel is 5160, blade length 13in, with a sharp if I remember right 6in top edge, think it is 2 1/4in wide, do know it 3/8in thick. It has a full flat grind so it cuts the weight down. For such a large thick knife it handles very well.
Don't known what kind of wood the handle is, I'm sure it's a good wood
