I like what you've done with the first design, especially there on the bottom. The two middles look mean. I think I could handle the second (your three-hander, was it?) and see the influences in the third easy. Both look good, though I'm more the type for longer than shorter blades, so you can guess which of those two would be my favorite.

Ok, the first one doesn't look right to my eyes, the thin part of the blade with the scroll just after it just doesn't look right. I think that's because both of the blades you've done with that particular blade look far too wide. The second and third swords look really spectacular, out of the two I like the second one more. The last one I absolutely love but again the blade looks far too wide to be a good sword to use. Make the blades less wide and put the POB near the crossguard and that would be one really mean sword. The thing about designing a wide bladed sword is the mechanics of the thing, at the moment the mechanics of your scimitar bladed swords just would not work well. Take the blade off your very first design and put it on the two scimitar like ones and they would be a very fast and fun cutting sword as long as you don't make it too blade heavy.
Keep up the good work Bren.

I think you're right BW. I have added some width at the start of the blade just after the ricasso, and reduced the belly of the blade. How does this grab you. All of these swords are probably too broad and would be much narrower cut from a 50mm or 70mm bar stock. OSLO 3a, and 3b:or this, the big hoor near the tip missing: OSLO 3c, and 3d:Do you reckon this blade could pull off the Oslo parts, or best left to the hooked handle? Cheers PS, notice I have numbered each design so we all can know which one we are talking about.
And I'm interested to hear everyones opinions on these.

I think 3a and 3c are very doable with the oslo bits as they are beautiful bits. I personally want to see you make 3c, that sword just screams elegant and functional. I also think they look better with the oslo bits than the swords without the bits. I think 3c would be elegant and you should go with that one personally.

I agree with Bloodwraith. Go with 3c... my only criticism is that I think the scroll-effect takes away from the aesthetic value of the weapon. I'm referring to the scrolled bit on the back of the blade (top, when going by the pic). I'd rather see something like a tongue of flame than the spiral... the spiral just seems to halt the movement of the blade, as it draws attention directly to the spiral.
Maybe try to identify only one or two major details to highlight in each weapon as opposed to a handful? (this includes the patterning on the hilt)
Overall your ability is remarkable, enough so that any of these designs could very likely be made without too much hassle. I've a mind to try to put some of my thoughts to paper sometime.. we'll see.
Good luck with it in any case.

Mandorallin has it right, I think that the scroll breaks up the aesthetic flow of this particular weapon. I know you are enjoying scrolling but not all your weapons need scrolls, yeah?

Yeah for sure. I just want the blades to be pretty intricate coz its more fun and time consuming to make, and more satisfying. I like Mandoralins idea of a tounge of flame. Any other ideas?
Mandoralin, let see those sketches.

As these are viking components I kind of want to stick with the double edged idea. I do want it as a pretty big, heavy two handed sword. Bear in mind that the blade will probably be longer than this sketch in reality. I think this would be pretty killer, but am not set on this. Grip to be half carved timber, and half either wire wrap, or Jute wrap. Knowing me I'd blue the blade lol. Anyway, criticisms, edits, sketches all welcome.

Oh Ho Ho, I've so figured this out. The Saxon weave on the pommel and hilt are very,.. serpentine,... would you say? I think this ties the spirit of the whole sword together, with a pair of fangs to boot:

Wow, now THAT! is hot! and ties in so well with the pommel and crosspiece. You have to make that, boy I would buy that without hesitation if I had the cash, geez I would pay more than a grand for that puppy. That is quite possibly the sexiest blade I have ever seen, although I wouldn't go half and half on the grip, I would do it as a wire wrap and do the blade as a big two hander. Nice one Bren, you get better and better as you progress.

Amazing! I love it! I always wanted to see a wavy, functional blade!

Amazing! I love it! I always wanted to see a wavy, functional blade! Yeah it hit me when Kleveland posted this in the "most wanted fantasy" page. I like the gentle curves of it, as opposed to the full on flamberg. And it will be functional, I guarantee it. That is quite possibly the sexiest blade I have ever seen, although I wouldn't go half and half on the grip, I would do it as a wire wrap and do the blade as a big two hander. I will have it as a fairly large two hander. I want about a 200mm grip (8") and about an 850-900mm (34-36") blade. Making it about 1160mm (45") overall. As for the grip I definately want to do some wood carving on it, to match it to the cross. I think I'll have it half n half, though weather in leather with risers as per the pic, or as wire or jute wrap? I dunno.

Is 8" going to be big enough mate? I know that you have meaty hands and I think you would want at least 10 if not 12" for the handle. Can't wait to see this one done, I think this one is the most anticipated blades at least for me.

I'm usually happy with 14cm (5.6") as a Bastard Handle and manage with both. I even manage to get half a second hand on with 12cm. But as this is such a square edged pommel I think 20cm (8") will get me through. I'll suck it and see at the time. I don't want this to be a 5 pounder, but 3.5 - 4 will be nice. I bought this piece of African Blackwood Ebony for the handle. I should get around 3 swords / knives out of it. cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=250215314235&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=015

Been working on a proper scale design scheme for this serpentine sword I've got planned for my Oslo Parts. I showed Eyal at DSA, he's really enthusiastic about it, and said he'd like to do something like that. I told him he's welcome to any of my designs. I reckon some sexy functional fantasy blades are always in order. Also been ebay happy as usual, and picked up some beautiful burl scales for future knife projects. How inspirational will these be? Now you can call me a hand and a half BW (Bastard) - I can't feel your spite These were from: stores.ebay.com.au/WEST-AUSTRALIAN-WOOD-SUPPLIERAll from Western Australia - local Gems - cool hey?
