Hi there, I'm thinking about doing a simple crossover mod on one of my few remaining katana. I wanted to avoid any major metal work such as a full basket or similar options. I have planned out a small tsuba-esque cutlass guard that seems feasible but I'm open to suggestions. Please feel free to make any other moderate and fairly inexpensive suggestions on the overall design. Thanks What I have so far

I like it,I like it a lot .Oxblood for the leather would contrast really well with the gold risers.Other than that I can't think of a thing I would change .Looking forward to seeing this piece finished.

Thanks for the input My drawing skills are lacking but my handwriting is even worse, lol, the text under the tsuka reads "leather over cord & risers" but I'm not against multi-coloring the leather. I also wanted to add that I am not really sure exactly what would make this a cutlass type sword other than maybe the way it's carried in the baldric. I am not well versed in non-Japanese swords so if it would more closely resemble another type, please let me know. This would be carried blade edge up as a regular katana and I think the typical cutlass is worn edge down, correct? I am also not sure if there ever was such a thing as a two-handed cutlass. I would like to do a full out hybrid someday but for now I am just trying to keep the expenses at a minimum and use the materials I have on hand which are: enough thick brown leather for the saya and hopefully the baldric, pig skin to wrap the tsuka, buffalo horn for the kashira and kojiri, a steel fuchi, and copper or brass for the seppa depending on which would look better. i also have black, brown, red, blue, violet, and green leather dye and I am able to mix colors to a certain extent. I was planning on making the tsuka a permanent assembly since there won't be a peened pommel. The only item I don't have and would likely have to outsource would be the guard I designed unless I'm feeling saucy and try my hand on some mild steel....doubtful. Does anyone have any good plans for a simple single or double loop baldric? I don't have sewing skills but can probably make do as long as it's not too elaborate. Preferably also one without a lot or any buckles I guess there would have to be at least on buckle to adjust the fit right? Maybe up near the right shoulder in the front? I will probably also change the riser config. I was thinking one thicker one in the center of the two at the middle. Thanks again

You can probably rivet up a baldrick. A cutlass is more or less a short saber. They tend to have machete-like blades. This is more akin to a Messer or Swiss saber, but It's your project, and if you say it's a cutlass katana, then it's a gosh darn cutlass katana, by golly.

I would love to see how this looks in person.

A cutlass is pretty much any short and handy cutting sword, typically single-edged and more or less curved. Much like a compact saber.
If you wanted to make it more cutlass-y, you could shorten the blade, perhaps...?
