This review I have had in the works for a little while now. Eryk of Polish Hussar Supplies had these pictures of four different sabers, three of which after months of waiting are finally now available. For the review, the weapon that I am reviewing is the chain hilted saber with the thumb ring.
For starters, I wanted to say communicating with Eryk was good. He responded to emails within a day or two, the only thing that concerned me a bit is he asked me to send a check instead of paypal, though I believe he will take paypal if you insist. It arrived at my door from UPS about a week after he withdrew payment from my checking account. I want to state a few things about this review.
This sword DOES NOT come sharp. The Sword in the review has been sharpened by me. There were also a few minor things that needed to be addressed. Number one, the leather washer on the sword cross guard wasn't cut to form and was glued on rather poorly. I had to recut it and glue it on to make it fit properly. The guard slot was drilled rather ugly also. See picture below:
Also the chape on the scabbard came loose as well and needed to be reglued. The only other minor problem is that the pommel on the sword is a bit loose. You can move it around along the wood core it is resting on, but I cannot knock it off. It's on there and isn't moving but it does wiggle a bit. Aside from these three items, I have found nothing game breaking.
Stats:
Weapon is 36 inches about from peen to tip
Blade is 30 inches
Bladed width at cross is a bit over 1 1/4 inches
5mm thick at spine
3.5 mm thick two inches from the tip
point of balance between 6 3/4 and 7 inches
center of percussion about 19 inches
Weight, no scale sorry
Here's a video of my handling it
(May not be ready at time of posting, check back in an hour at worst)
This sword is very, very fast. This is especially so because the thumb ring aids greatly in control. Once sharpened, it can cut well also. It is rather stiff, but not overly. It has some minor flex to it. The stock edge is about the same thickness as a Windlass and about has hard to sharpen, if not little harder. I have done some abusive test to this weapon, beating it against an anvil and chopping down branches etc. It had no issues doing these things at all.
Other than that, I can't find an exact historic example of a saber looking just like this with the chain hilt but there are many similar sabers with the thumb ring. The only other saber I found that looks like this is Bohun's sword from the Movie version of With Fire and Sword. It looks just like the Saber the antagonist uses at the end!
Over all I'm happy with it. Yes the package has its faults but for $335, it's a good deal and well tempered. I wouldn't call it a stage sword, more like a functional replica or a possible sharp.
*A few more points, the scabbard is wood cored covered in leather. It is well stitched, but like I said the chape may come loose. Eryk himself, the owner of Polish Hussar Supplies, told me a few people had issues with some scabbard fittings. Granted, they are all easy to fix by regluing them. The wood used in the scabbard is pretty sturdy but the leather wrapped around it does wear a bit quickly with the langets rubbing off the dye. Nothing serious though.
