So I'm thinking of buying some chainmail; as a student, I certainly do not have nearly enough time to make a hauberk, plus there is a deadline for when I need it to participate in my school's Renaissance fair. I could go without, but that' sustain no fun.
I've settled on buying some mail from Kult of Athena, specifically a hauberk from GDFB. I'd love to spend four hundred dollars for a full riveted hauberk, but unfortunately I don't exactly have four hundred dollars lying around.
That leaves two options for the hauberk; KOA offers butted mail in mild steel and high tensile steel options, the latter for a few dollars more. Logic would dictate that the more expensive option would be the better quality one, but there's no reason to not ask. What are the differences between mild steel and HT steel? Obviously HT steel is harder, and that might be more desirable because in scripted fights there is always the off-chance that some of the scripts may include me getting slashed(there's no stabbing - too dangerous) and I also plan to use whichever one I get to participate in my local Dagorhir chapter. Is the difference between mild steel and HT steel really that big? Is it worth it spending twenty dollars more? Any come to getting HT steel aside from more expensive?
Thanks!

Depending on the ring size, mild steel butted mail can be durable enough for coreographed fights. Gambeson under the mail is actually much more important for your safety.

So there really isn't much of a difference between mild steel and HT steel?

There is a difference, it just may not be enough to warrant the additional funds. HT is hardened which will make it less likely to open up when struck. If you were in the SCA(where you are deliberately getting hit and sometimes very hard) , I would definitely say go for the HT but for choreographed scenes and costume purposes it shouldn't be needed.
