Wow, you're not having much luck with this, are you? It's a real shame. So I guess pictures are out of the question now?

It grows more and more painfully obvious that some of us simply have far too much free time.
Credit, though, for sheer creativity.

It looks cool, but.... Well, it isn't a period helmet. It's kind of a conglomeration of periods at best. The spangen design is early Norse/Germanic, but was no longer used by the time face plates like that one were used. Granted, the Sutton Hoo helm has a face cover and is a historic helmet, but this one is not. It's too "late" looking. Seems to almost be an SCA helm design.

I actually did an experiment with some old motorcycle cylinders in which I honed the inside surfaces then coated the cylinder walls with engine oil, chassis grease, WD40, and some other kind of oil. After sitting out in the weather for over a week, in the humid coast of Texas, the cylinder coated with WD40 had the least rust. Might work on your spangenhelm also.

AFAIK, spangenhelms came from the Persian Sassanian helms from the 3rd century AD and were carried into Europe by the later Roman Army. You can get an oily rag and wipe it down frequently, being sure to keep a light coat of oil on it at all times. I live in Florida and all my helms are mild steel, I know what fighting the rust monster is like. If you ever want to make your helm more period, you should be able to pop the face plate off, and you will have a nice Spangen top.
