I have the trailer hitch I fooled around with to make into a ball pommel thingy: But I'm going to look at weights and sizing of these spear butts..

Mine is exactly the same Chris. The ebony halft i made is very similar to a baseball handle.Still it worked out ok and the handling was fine for such a large spear blade.I Turned it into a short sword though and the handling is extremely sweet, pretty much the perfect close quarters heavy cutter.I've owned a few swords (3 a trims among them) and my Fallen spear blade is by far my favourite blade.Gives me a big smile whenever I handle her

When you say turned it into a short sword- what do you mean exactly? Pics! Gotta see! My blade is heavier than yours, but when I hold the tang I get a real feeling that if it had a pommel on the end, it would be a pretty sweet 2 handed shortsword...

Mines still very much a work in progress (I've still got lots planned) basically all I've done is cut 1/1/2 "" off the tang.I rounded the tang off and fitted two ebony scales. It only took me an hour and was done more out of curiosity than anything else. The handling though has been transformed,it balances extremely well as a a short short, much more compact and deadly in the hand. It's hard to describe, but I feel this is the blades true calling and I'm planning a scabbard and hilt upgrade for it.It really does make me smile and is arguably to me the perfect anti zombie blade. It's just awesome That was my rough ebony handle scale.I'm busy smoothing it out and also have some brass screws on order which I plan on fitting .This blade is just sublime, basically a high end can opener,i love it Attachments:

Looks wicked. I'm going to keep mine on a spear haft as I'm pretty sure I'll be getting a short sword version of my blade from Fallen eventually.
For this leaf spear, I think I'm going to change up the rounded shape of the haft where it meets the blade, and match the new shape with the scabbard.

Went ahead and reshaped the end of the wood. When I make the scabbard I'll follow this shape at the mouth. I'm also going to use the exposed hole in the tang to keep the scabbard fixed to the blade when sheathed.

Did you sand blast the blade.

no - lol. That's just sawdust sticking to the mineral oil, and some of the darkness in the etch came off when I cleaned the blade. I'll recolour it once it's mounted.

Good I was about to get up set with the satin finish I had put on the blade, thought I had screwed up.

Finish is good. I know from all the handles I've made that some sawdust on a blade doesn't do any harm, and I whenever I handle the leaf spear I actually wear gloves

I'm loving maple wood these days. Also, I drink maple syrup straight from the bottle all the time. Just sayin'

well, I just can't get it out of my head that I don't like the shape I came up with for the haft. Going to have to scrap it and start over... been toying with it for the last week off and on and just can't shake the feeling that I don't quite like the shape.

No,Aussie.i was planning on Brass/bronze flush fitting cap screws.I was going to use a Forstner bit to recess the wood and flush fit the screws to the handles. Admittedly I've been so taken up with my new Gladius build (and a new Freddy krueger glove build That I'm working on )that I totally forgot about the spear modification.

I don't want to jinx myself but I started this one up again after over a year hiatus and I'm about one days work away from finishing it up. With luck I'll have it shaped and wrapped tonight. Noice!

I'll get some up tomorrow. Had to go buy more slow setting epoxy this evening so that delayed me. Natually once I got home the kids were tearing up the place having a blast, which while being fun, prevented me from getting back into the shop. Once the house settles down for the night I plan to finish gluing and pinning everything together then I should be able to do the final shaping a couple of hours later. Not sure how I want to wrap the handle but probably like I just did my tomahawk.

I wasn't thinking last night about how long it will take to finish the wood - going to apply several coats of antique oil - and I can't wrap the grip until that is done. but the overall shaping is done, just a bit of finish sanding left then I can begin oiling the wood. It's just shy of 4' oal, and it's a monster!
