Just reading news site and found out the news about a Acehnese (from Aceh, Indonesia) that 'discovered' a pair of 'antique' sword from VOC era (VOC was dissolved in 1795... so if this is true, then it's pretty old). However I'm very skeptical with this... The sword looks like a piece of junk (tourist crap) that make no sense at all... VOC was disbanded in 1795 and Dutch army didn't reach Aceh until 1899 or so... so there is 100 years difference in timeframe. Also these swords doesn't really look like a well made sword... Maybe our saber expert (Dave Kelly) can chime in?

Lion headed swords are typical post Napoleonic naval themed weapons that were adopted by some countries, Germany particularly, for cavalry. So these could be real. Late 19th Century though.
Proliferation of junk swords in that part of the world is reason to be cautiously sceptical.

Those are fakes. I do not know whether the thread at Vikingsword is the one, but I read a thread somewhere, myArmoury, SFI, about these swords and the name Shaver Cool. Some guy even plowed through the VOC records in Amsterdam. VOC never had these made, there never was a Shaver Cool, completely bogus tourist crap which turns up every couple of years. The swords in the pictures are as new as a baby bottom too. Cheers, Ulahn.
Edit: By the way, we called the place ,, Atjeh''.

ð€£ð€£ð€£ Seven years later! A Shaver Cool (Saverkool) swords emerges here in Amsterdam. Seems that these were indeed tourist crap that could be bought in Indonesia. The ones you show here from Atjeh look like rip-off Dutch navy officer sabres. The Navy version of the M1912 officers from the Dutch infantry and Marechaussee. (Military Police) Any decent Dutch military sabre untill the Batavian Republic can be found here, including that navy one. (It is in Dutch) www.sabels.net/index.phpAnd the Shaver Cool is not in it!

If you are looking for the ultimate guide on Dutch edged weapons, this is the one. It is in Dutch though, and an original Sh*v*r Kewl kind is also in it. It is on page 55, pic. 62. Only this is an Patriotic sabre used in the United States War of Independence. Due to sentiments enlightened by the French republican movement, the Netherlands plunged into civil unrest (Staatse Tijd) , and a lot of the military mercenaries and guards (city militia, for there was not an state army. Soldiers were hired from everywhere) moved to the Americas to fight the British. This sword is edged with Mambo-Jambo from the US, but then in a decent way, and not like the East-Indies âscratching for touristâ way. (Real Indonesian art is of an outstanding fine quality, that even exceeds the finest Thai! Especially the Balinese and Javan art) Anyway. Here is the link to the Dutch âsword bibleâ. www.adviesoudewapens.nl/blankewapens.pdf
