Hello again sword forum I been doing some shopping on Ebay for swords.
Ebay may not sound the best unless you know your vendors and the sword specification and reputation from the customers. And even that may not be enough.
I have been helped on this forum with kind regards and knowledge.
I decided to take a small risk to see why the Odachi sword on ebay was being sold with such great feedback. The two people who I consider to buy the Odachi style I wanted (very long blade with a short handle, at least 5 feet long) from where Kaze99 and Katana1980. They were good vendors but, in the end I chose Kaze99.
Note: The Odachi swords, Katana1980 and Kaze99 sell, are called Nodachi because they term has been switched so much. They called their Odachi sword, Nodachi sword.
Katana1980 ban me from buying his stuff for some reason. I sent 2 e-mails questioning the quality of the Odachi and the process. He banned me without reply and I tried to apologize but, nothing worked. I think because I do not have a reputation as a buyer I could not be trusted. He was right not to sell to me because I would ruin his reputation if I found anything wrong with the sword and I think he did not want to sell to someone who was new to buying sword on ebay. I was displease however, his swords seems really good and I did wanted to buy some of the nodachi sword because they were in reasonable price of $140-$170 dollars and plus customization. O well. Katana1980 has good reputation with his customers and communication I am guessing.
Kaze99 however, told me about the sword and said it would shake a little and the length of the blade is too long. Kaze99 straight up told me that there may be problems in the blade because of the length. I questions how wobbly it was and told him about this video:
He probably laughed and told me that his sword does not shake like the guy’s sword on the video. So he was kind to suggest he give me a video of his sword in two or three days.
After sometime of research and questioning for the Odachi sword I decided to go and buy the sword even if it was wobbly or shaky or plainly a wallhanger I would buy it to know if the odachi on ebay had improve or are still loads of junks. If it was junk I would ruin the reputation of the vendor with fury.
I waited for almost three weeks for the sword to arrive and when it did. It came in a foam package with a box for a smaller sword wrapped with so much tape I could not even hear the rattle or the sound of the sword inside.
It took 10 minutes for me to cut the tape and foam to get to the sword and it was just a mess.
After the packaging had been removing my sword was in a very good quality sword bag, in my opinion. Then the moment came to see how floppy this sword was. To my surprise and literally I was shouting, the sword did not wiggle an inch. I was so surprise I shook the sword and wondered where the shakiness of the blade was. There was none. I decide to do the horizontal test where I held the blade horizontally and see how much sway or bend it had. It had no bend or sway when I held it. The sword held up horizontally perfect. I swung it around to make sure there were no illusions of some sort. And the blade was amazing straight. The blade was incredible for the price and the customization on order on it was exactly matched.
Kaze99 really made sure the sword I got was what I expected and I have no complains about it.
I do not pictures or anything to show how great the sword so sorry. However, I can compare it to some other swords.
The odachi sword I bought was surprisingly the same quality as a Musashi sword or Musha sword. It had no real harmon and the fittings were tight and well done. The blade was tempered and harden of 1060 steel. It was full tang and the saya was long.
The sword passed all my expectations and held up much better than the other cheap odachis with stainless steel blades.
On a list of 1-10 the sword was probably an 8.2 for me
Here is what I think would be compare to
1.Cheap Odachis $40-$60 (stainless steel mainly)
2.Stainless temper steel Odachi $60-$90
3.really Cheap Carbon steel odachi (durable steel) not temper or harden $70-$100
4.Cheap Odachi/Nodachi sword (1045 steel) not temper or harden $50-$120
5.Anime replica Odachi/Nodachi (undefined steel type) $60-$150
6.Sturdy Odachi/nodachi no wiggle or shake or flop or sway.
7.Ritter steel, 69 inch or more odachi/nodachi sword with (1045-1060)
8.Ebay forgeries Odachi/Nodachi (1045-1080) temper and harden $140-$400. Mainly reliable venders and trusted sellers.
9.Hanwei Odachi which would be 9.8 rating $1000-$1600
10. Nihonto Odachi and The master work of true Nodachi sword (Priceless)
This list is not accurate by any means expect for the Nihonto Odachi because those sword are priceless and owning one would be a real treasure.
I have dealt with many of the cheap Odachi but not Ritter steel because I could not find any reviews about it sword. I have not seen anyone disappoint about the Hanwei Odachi so I suspect it must be really good. Anyway if I am wrong about any information please correct me and I am glade about this purchase and the result.
Any way this was my review about a purchase I Highly recommend this sword to beginners and sword collectors who just are looking for a big sword and do not have the funds to buy the expensive ones.
