Hey guys, I saw that Chris Fields is doing a small run of Pan swords from "Hook" made from spring tempered bronze. Thought I wouldn't be the only person who liked the idea. Info below, with images of prototype. www.therpf.com/f13/pans-sword-hook-200358/"Blade is spring tempered bronze, polished to a mirror which gives a "gold" appearance. Guard is a real coconut shell covered in leather. Grip is wood covered in leather. And on the new version I will probably have a bronze end cap as well, but darkened up to blend into the grip."

Wow, that's really neat. I loved the movie Hook in my youth, and am still fond of it. The sword always did intrigue me, one of the few movie pieces that really did. I can't see the link because I don't have an account, and I'll be honest: I don't feel like making one. Can you share any more details on contact, pricing, etc.? My interest is piqued, but I need to know more before I decide whether it's "worth it" in my current financial blah blah blah I'm broke who am I kidding.

Same here. It had a very iconic presence for such a simple design.
Ah, sorry, didn't realize that section of the RPF was unviewable without an account. Pricing is at $350 plus shipping (ships from Florida). Contact seems to only be through the Replica Prop Forum's classifieds. He's asking for a post in the interest thread there and a 50% deposit to reserve one's spot in the run (less than 5 pieces/spots). You can look up some of Chris's previous work on SFI, good materials, clean lines.

Spring tempered bronze? How does that hold up? I love the concept.

Very interesting. I was just thinking about this movie earlier this week.

Wow, $350 is not bad at all. I was expecting a lot more. I guess coconut is a pretty inexpensive material. I'd be curious to see how quickly spots fill up, if they haven't already. I doubt I'll get in, but if signups are slow...

Not as well as steel (though people made bronze swords for a while before we made steel ones) but it's meant to accurately represent the appearance of the film sword more than it is meant to be a backyard beater. They are being made with false edges (though can be sharpened to a true edge).
Yea, it's tempting. There's one or two spots left in the run as of this morning.

Pretty cool idea... tho I will never do a 'half up front' payment for any project ever again. Been burned too many times.

I hear that. Though with a run that's smaller than half-a-dozen I think the possibility of backlog, mounting delays, and lack of communication that can plague these kind of runs is somewhat lessened. He's already made this sword for a satisfied customer before, and started this run because "For some reason, [he's] been receiving a lot of requests for this blade." I don't think I can get in on it myself, but I know it's a cool-looking project that I'd like to see through to completion. Chris's work and conduct seem to be well received, he's done Captain America shield projects and runs that were praised. And he's done several sword projects over on SFI.

Despite the fact it isn't as functional as a steel blade, I would still love to own one of these. Beautiful sword.

The run is now closed, at 4 pieces. But Chris wrote today that ""
Might be worth setting aside some money for after I see how this run goes.

Hey Zach do you have any idea on how tuff these blades are compared to other Bronze Age swords?

I have no idea, you'd have to ask Chris and someone like Neil Burridge.

Bronze that size would have made the sword VERY heavy. If you use a good preserving process the coconut shell should hold up as well as wood... and these swords are PURELY display pieces and not meant for function anyway.
