The Ultra-Fine Ascent exists. It really is FLAT, as advertised!!!!! The bad news is it doesn't come with a case, although SharpeningSupplies lists Norton 8x2 & 8x3 cases in their "Norton Replacement Stones and Parts" section, and those should fit the 2 larger size stones. For now I'm storing mine in some of the bubble wrap it came in.
It came with a sheet that also mentions a "Fine" version, although I haven't seen in on sale anywhere. A grit comparison chart has the Ultra-Fine in the finest position, slightly finer than an 8000-grit waterstone; and lists the "Fine" as about 900 grit, slightly finer than hard Arkansas but much coarser than 4000-grit waterstone. But grind mark pics on the other side make the Ascents seem coarser than you'd expect from the chart. Hmmmmm....
I hope to eventually do my own tests and post microscope pics to evaluate exactly how the Ascent UF compares to the Spyderco Fine & Ultra-Fine, but don't hold your breath. In a perfect world the two Ascents would closely match the two Spydercos and as an extra bonus the 8x2 size would fit in the boxes that came with the non-flat Spydercos that you would no longer need :)
