I purchased this sword from Albion Europe.
Albion Ulvbane Sword
Specifications
Overall length: 43.5"
Blade length: 36"
Blade width: 2"
CoG: 6.5"
CoP: 23.8"
Grip Length: 4.25"
Weight: 3.73 lbs
Background: Movie sword from Arn The Knight Templar.
Ulvbane’s sword stands out completely from the other swords in the film, as the film makers wanted a sword that was large, heavy and powerful looking.
Ulvbane’s sword weighs almost two kilograms and demands strong arms and good technique by the person who wields it.
Edmund Ulvbane was a Dane, so sword smith Peter Johnsson turned to the National Museum in Kopenhagen for material to study. The inspiration for the design comes from a sword on display that has its roots in the 12th C.
The decorative dragon motif carving is influenced by a sword found in a womans grave in Sountaka, Finland.
Observations: This sword is a monster.
Peter Johnsson said this about the sword on MyArmoury: "This sword is huge and massive. The blade is that of the St Maurice of Turino, but with a larger hilt and longer fuller. Some swords of the viking age are as heavy as this or even more in a few cases. They are definitely a witness to the fact that there are some guys that are larger and stronger than average. And yet, there are some swords of the viking age that share this aspect of hugeness. A few of the surviving swords have a size that smacks of the unreal".
I used to own the Albion Saint Maurice Sword and in my opinion, the Ulvbane handles better. This is not a realistic sword anyone would take into battle unless you were a really strong mounted knight. I base this on the fact that the Saint Maurice was an actual weapon and has the same type feel as the Ulvbane.
Negatives for me would be the grip is slightly long to control the sword for me. I would feel more comfortable with my hand locked between the pommel and guard due to the size of the sword.
Conclusion: Great functional movie sword that compliments my Arn Sword. I have no regrets with the purchase and really like the hilt engraving and overall sword. It is a big and bad sword made to reflect the character in the movie.
