So your a man at arms who's kingdom was just attacked by a dragon. Your lord has given you and a small group of men the task of slaying the dragon. The kingdoms armory and blacksmiths are made available to you to make any weapons needed to slay the beast. Which is 40 to 50 feet long and 15 feet at the shoulder. It can fly, breath fire and all that good stuff. You have all the weapons you need but need to have a sword made for killing the dragon. How would you design it? I think something long and spear like. With a very long grip and blade like a very big albion dane or a nodachi. Made for thrusting with a reinforced tip like albion/filmsword's Zerro sword but can still can cut well. What do you guys think? www.albion-swords.com/swords/alb ... hander.htm www.fableblades.com/Dha.htmlfilmswords.com/zorro/90th-annive ... -zorro.htm

I think the Dane would be an excellent choice out of the production blades. Maybe a pole axe with a really long spear point with axe.

My first choice would be a spear. What's the biggest you can make the Dane and still be able to handle it.

This post doesn't seem to be very popular. I guess no one has dragons in their area.

Something with massive Cutting/Cleaving power, Plenty of blade presence and really durable. Fable Blade Nokkelen, Hand of Tyr, Crimson Sleep styled blades.

I'd prefer a spear as well. The one from the movie dragon slayer is perfect I think. But I figured have a little fun and design a dragon slayer's sword.

Well for me i would go for optimal thrusting,I don't think a cutting sword would be any use against a Dragons plates.A Boar Sword would work for me. This Jody Samson version is stunning Very stiff blade perfect for sliding between those pesky plates.Although to be honest I would much rather get Daenerys Targaryen to have a quiet word with it,and afterwards try my best chat up lines on her Attachments:

If reading has taught me anything, all you need is Black Arrow.

Judging by the OP, a sword must be used to slay the dragon. Either proverbs foretold the dragon would be slain by sword or some magic/curse makes it killable only by sword.
When attacking a dragon with a sword there are only two ways to score other than superficial wounds. The first is a thrust into vital organs, which will be protected by at least 2 feet of scales and tissue, so a long bladed thrusting sword is one choice.
The second way is to cut mostly or completely through the neck. This would be appxly the same as cutting through a barrel load of tatami mats. Again a long blade is needed.
The trick with either method is to immobilize the dragon first. This is where your group of men come in. Time to issue them red tabbards.

I was originally thinking a ballista over a crossbow.

I'd use this if it were finished, but it's getting there. Although I'm with those that would first use a spear 'gainst such a horrid beast. If it came to my sword though, i'd like a hard, sharp tip beefy enough to pry and pierce the vital scales. The blade itself long with a swell for slashing at limb joints, or cleaving at the wrists, ankles and toes. As up close and personal as you'd have to be, i'd have all my money and best wishes invested in my shield and armor to go head to head with a fire breathing dragon.
