Hi Mike, the m1902 is still a regulation sword, as are the the Marine officer and NCO swords.
A lot of the India produced stuff will sharpen up just fine and there is a grand variety. I'm sure you must know of the Discriminating General's site (Military Heritage).
There are also some Bulcher-like German swords from the WWI era that are quite sound but prices are rising steadily on those. Some of the American Civil War prices these days are getting a bit rediculous but if they appeal, now is the time. It's not likely they will fall in price.
There are some threads going on elsewhere about the relative merits of using antiques. I'm kind of on the fence over that but do know my short list of antique wants is not for users. I've two Atrim, three Arms&Armor and a couple of Del Tins I love cutting stuff with. My lowly PK fills the katana void and a couple of Windlass pointy thrusters take care of poking things and my fop niche. Add "Choppy" my Conyer's falchion and that College Hill newbie, I have the user category pretty well filled.
I may well see myself funding antiques by taking a loss on some of my users but each seems to have a special place in my heart. Many were from the secondary market in the first place. Two of the three A&A and both Del Tins. I paid $150 for the Conyers Falchion at a time when the smith was pricing them at more than $300.
Oopps, oh yeah, sabres. I study them a lot more than I want to own a great deal of them. Aside from the eagle on my shrine page, I wouldn't mind a particular S&K M1840 I have targeted (or one of a dozen other M1840/1822s. I won't say where). I'm very close to slapping a particular antique on a credit card but it's not a curved sword. Less money than a lot of production swords but more than $300.
Cheers
Hotspur; I should just do it
