I forgot some companies had capitalized on that one. I think Ritter Steel had a pretty decent one way back that wasn't remotely "series accurate" but made a fine backwards sword. There were a good half-dozen or more "functional" models in varying color schemes and such. That seems like so long ago...

I just can't think of a reason to have such a thing. In the series, they said "it's a reverse blade sword. It can't kill anyone", but that's bull. All you have to do is turn it around. Kenshin actually does that when he fights Jin-e (dunno if I spelled it right) and again when he cuts down a stone column in front of kanryu's mansion, but, then, I'm once again looking for logic in an anime.

You're also taking an abstract statement literally. Kenshin is a master of battoujutsu (that's where he gets the title "battousai", after all) which, much like iaijutsu, relies on striking the opponent with a draw cut. With the sakabatou, it is nearly impossible to kill someone with a draw cut or, really, any kind of sword stroke... Unless Kenshin makes the conscious decision to turn the blade around; which, if memory serves, he only does at a few points in the series because he found himself backed into a corner and had no other way to save someone (nowhere is this better illustrated than in his duel against Cho the sword hunter; in order to save a child, he made the conscious decision to kill Cho, with the blade turning out to be a new sakabatou and his vow remaining unbroken were happy accidents).
But, seeing as this is neither here nor there, you'll now be returned to your regularly scheduled thread on anime swords.

It's not that it "can't" kill anyone (even though that is said in the anime) it's that Kenshin has put his killing past behind him and so to has his sword. Which also means he can't forget killing but accepts that it is no longer in his forward path, so when he turns around his sword to kill it means regression. It's more overt symbolism. Really he could have used a blunted sword but it's the meaning of the instrument. Really though a blunted sword can kill you.

Yep, I remember seeing those around. Always thought the bohi looked awkward.
Oni and Vincent are forgetting the fight against Saito, too. He'd turned it around briefly before it was knocked out of his hand. Of course, that was while he was reverted to the ol' Battousai fella.
Nevertheless, moot points. Reverse-blade katana are no more than awkward oversized sickles, but for RK fans, they're still kinda cool. :geek:

Eh it was decently cheap I think only 100-150 but all in all its decently solid. Its a nice little novelty to bring out when I have friends over who haven't seen one.

I finished the Kenshin manga last week and I found it amusing that Kenshin was fine w/his vow to not kill people but they didn't address how crippled his opponents were from the blunted edge. Overall, it was enjoyable but I think the swordplay could have been better. Were the anime fight scenes good? Only watched up to when the Oniwa Banshuu started to show up.
Speaking of sakabatou, the supposedly higher quality ones are surprisingly present among forges these days. Zhi Sword, swordsmith668 (ebay), and swordmaker688 (ebay) all have sakabatou on their sites.
I'd like to see better quality swords for Bleach as I like some of those or the ones that you can see with Eva figurines, love those designs.
If the anime sword design isn't too insane, forges like Sinosword might be willing to make it for you. If I win the lottery, oh the things I would do...

I may have said this before. Anime swords seem to fall in to two extremes. They are either over-the-top huge, oddly shaped, and unweildy, or painfully generic. There are very few cool anime swords that are also practical.

I beg to differ...
Kanshou & Bakuya - Fate/Stay Night Sword of Fanelia - The Vision of Escaflowne Better Half - Hataraku, Maou-sama! Armstrong Family Sword - Fullmetal Alchemist Gravity Blade - UQ Holder (Manga) La Pucelle - Fate/Apocrypha (Light Novel) Balmung - Fate/Apocrypha Griffith's Sword - Berserk Saya's (First) Sword - Blood+ Most swords - Ubel Blatt Amon's Royal Sword - Magi the Labyrinth of Magic Murata-tou - Highschool of the Dead Derflinger - Zero no Tsukaima Watou - Rurouni Kenshin Li Syaoran's Sword - Cardcaptor Sakura Sayaka's Cutlass - Puella Magi Madoka Magica
With the exception of that last one, all of them are just those that are in series I have personally seen/read, which is but a small sampling of all the manga & anime available. A better statement would have been "the most popular shounen series and a number of fantasy video games have either ridiculously oversized or painfully generic swords".

I'm going to stand by my previous statement. There are long lists of ridiculous anime swords.

Most of which can be found in the same 2 or 3 series: Bleach, Naruto, Fairy Tail, Rave Master, Generic Shounen Fighting Series #153... Noticing a pattern? Of course, most of those series have the benefit of a setting where the laws of physics as we know them don't exist. And while I'm at it, I'll add the following to my previous list:
Mugen's sword - Samurai Champloo Getsururitou - Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto Kurikara - Ao no Exorcist Trunk's sword - Dragon Ball Z Monohoshi Zao - Fate/Stay Night Caliburn - Fate/Stay Night Miroku - My-Hime Nyanta's rapiers - Log Horizon Naotsugu's longsword - Log Horizon Akatsuki's ninjato - Log Horizon Lambent Light - Sword Art Online
Again, I've seen all but that last one (it's just been so long in a couple cases, I forgot all about them). Seriously, if you branch out a bit from those generic shounen fighting series, you might find a plethora of anime swords that do not fall into those two extremes.

The Ao no Exorcist sword was actually a historical type.
The fact that there was a sword in DBZ caused a lot of inconsistencies, not that anything else made sense.
The shounen stuff has the most swords really. SAO had a lot of nice ones, but there were also some crazy ones. Most of the non-shounen stuff I come across has nothing to do with swords. If they have some, they are usually generic katana. Then we have Sengoku Basara. The weapons in the first two episodes (the only two I was able to watch) weren't too ridiculous, but they were wielded in ridiculos ways. One character has generic katanas, but he wields six of them at a time. Another one uses three bladed spears (historical) but two at once.

I know; it's based on the efu koshirae found on tachi, but it's also neither ridiculously large or painfully generic, so it still fits on my list.
What inconsistencies? It actually served its purpose: cutting Frieza to tiny pieces. Even Yajirobi turned out to be a lethal joke character when he used his sword to cut off Vegeta's tail while he was in his oozaru form. I'm also a bit confused by what you say didn't make sense; within the setting, everything was pretty appropriate. Then again, I'm thinking more of the manga which, while moderately long at 519 chapters, was nowhere near as bloated as the anime, which had 508 episodes and 18 films.
Two spears at once isn't really all that outrageous; the only reason not to do it in real life is because it would give up the spear's reach. But Sengoku Basara is what happens when you try and adapt a fighting game into an anime. That said, there's a logic behind the ridiculous designs: they're large, so they're easy to see, and they're distinct, so even in crowd shots, readers/viewers can pick out the hero (or at least important character), but most of all, they're simple in design, because if you have to redraw it several times a page, a few dozen times a chapter, every week for the manga's duration, you'd probably want to keep it as simple as possible.

Inconsistencies related to the sword: He was able to cut frieza but not the androids. Goku caught the darn thing with his bare hands. It just seems kind of useless in that world of superhumans.
Things that don't make sense: Raddits was sooo much stronger than goku, but goku was able to hold him for picolo. Both goku and picolo are seen blowing back weak opponents with their energy, but yet picolo couldn't shake a weakened android whose arme he rips off moments later. Krillin couldn't put a scratch on frieza with any of his attacks, but his destructo disk (kienzan i think it's called in the sub) can cut him. Now, I get it. It's sharp, but still. Then guku and gohan went permanent super seiyan, but it wore off later apparently. It has been a looong time since I watched it. Those are just the things I remember.

Fair point. Keep in mind, though, that the timeline Trunks came from didn't have superhumans; the Androids killed them all off. And actually, Goku caught it with a finger, but DBZ practically invented the battle aura as we know it today, so there's that. His sword may work fine on cyborg aliens and possibly even superhumans not exerting a mystical battle aura, but I'd like to see the sword that could through machinery.
Admittedly, it's been a long time since I read the manga, myself, but from what I remember, this is how it worked:
Radtiz vs Goku & Piccolo - Raditz was weakened when his armor broke and Goku weakened him further by holding his tail (takes away all their strength temporarily; I'd say it lasts a few minutes beyond releasing the tail for weaker Saiyans, seeing as how stronger ones can overcome that weakness) and then grabbed him in a full nelson, but even then struggled to hold him, hence the sacrifice play.
Piccolo vs. Androids - Depends on which Androids you're referring to, but if it was 19 & 20, they could absorb any energy thrown at them (if I'm remembering right), but against the raw brute force that some of these characters can exert, they're pretty fragile machines. That said, I'd probably have to go back and reread the scene you're talking about, assuming it's not an anime only (when you can cut out almost 200 episodes and not lose anything vital to the story, you're doing something wrong).
Krillin vs. Frieza - I think, in this case, it's just the nature of the technique. I believe it explicitly cuts anything in its path, even expanding to cut things that it shouldn't be able to cut simply due to its breadth (for instance, it's about 3ft in diameter, but I remember it expanding to cut the top off a mountain). Alternatively, a threshold awareness; Frieza may keep his guard up around any who could potentially threaten him, but around those so weak he could blink them to death, he pays no mind. It's basically the same as stepping warily around the 6' tall dude built like a brick shithouse cracking his knuckles threateningly, but ignoring the elderly gent with the cane. So when the elderly gent cracks you in the face with said cane, it seems to come out of nowhere.
Goku & Gohan & Permanent SSJ - I don't think it actually wore off or was ever permanent in the first place. I think they were consciously maintaining it 24/7 so that their base energy level eventually rose past the threshold that marks the lowest level for SSJ status; if their energy ever dropped below that mark or they just decided to go back to normal (because a dude with insanely spiky, shining gold hair and teal eyes doesn't exactly blend into a crowd), then it stands to reason that they'd stop being SSJ all the time.

It was able to cut through frieza, who was made up of mostly machinery by that time.
