Ramm, that helmet is absolutely fabulous ;D The amazing thing is he calls it an experiment +1 for finding that, I think it is superb.

Hey Jake, let us know how your maile turns out. I'd like to see what that price can get you.

I'll do a full armor review as soon as it arrives. It'll take at least a week, I'm guessing.

Gentlemen, my apologies - I have been busy of late and neglected to tell you about my newest acquisition. To make up for it, I bring you a multitude of pics...in which I look like I have a lazy eye, but I'll blame this mostly on the fact that the pics were taken very late after celebrating my acceptance into an excellent private college. Most vikings didn't wear shorts, I know. Even Shield-Danes must move with the times. With coif Some Niðing, wearing my bloody chain mail! With the Irish Bastard and dirk.

Looks great Jake. I like your shield. You may need to trim the sleeves on that shirt like I did. That way they don't flap like angle wings. I am sure you already figured out that if you swing a sword the sleeves will hit you in the face. If you plan to wear a gambeson, that may not be necessary. You have to try it out. My sleeves were full length to the wrist, so the face slapping was too much.

Shipping is my biggest obstacle with buying medieval clothing. I can't justify ten or twelve dollars in shipping just to buy a padded shirt. Anyhow, that was the gambeson I had been looking at for when I'm a bit more flush with cash. Trimming the sleeves on the gambeson is also a priority, though I'm wondering how I could do that efficiently.
It's butted, yes. The weight is around 25-30 pounds, which is considerably less than I do arm curls with on free weights at the gym, so it's not too bad. It was really weird the first time I wore it, like stepping onto a high-gravity planet, but once you move around a bit it's not bad at all. The weight can be a problem after a while if you don't wear a belt. With a belt, it's easily manageable.
I wonder if Vikings even wore gambesons. I know the Romans didn't, it might not have been prevalent until later. Looks good with my Dragonforce shirt and the shield that my dad helped me make and my sister painted, bless their little hearts.
Centurion - I got my mail at a site mentioned earlier in this thread, Real Armor of God, for about $100 (plus $18 for the coif) due to liquidation. I can attest that it's not a scam, it is the real deal. I don't know if the price is still good, but if it is I highly recommend it for anyone needing mail.
I'm VERY satisfied. Thanks to everyone who posted advice.

Coming late to this thread...
As background, I do SCA fighting, with an eye towards Living History as much as possible. Look at just a bit later (12th century Crusader), but not a whole ton changed with regards to technology.
Butted maille is costume use only. Even wearing it around will shed links. The biggest thing to worry about is maintaining it. As soon as a hole develops, it gets larger much faster. If you are willing to do the maintenance on butted maille, it is a decent entry level piece (especially if all you want to do is look cool).
Riveted maille is period for Norse cultures. The only existing butted maille we have found was pre-Greek Celtic, and a later 16th century standard (neck guard) which appears to be for display only. Technically, to be truly period, they would have alternated solid punched rings and riveted rings. This helps to cut the weight down quite a bit. For the viking era, you would want wedge riveted rings, instead of round rivets (to be completely technical).
The cheapest I have seen riveted going for is $300 for find-it armoury on ebay. After that, Von Sussen (which was posted earlier) is decently cheap as well. Other importers are Icefalcon.com, and Historic Enterprises (carrying round and wedge riveted respecively). Historic Enterprises also sells loose rivets to alter and modify the shirts for better fits.
