I'm not looking for any reenactment armor, though if it met the safety standards of the various groups that would be great. I'd just like a nice shirt of maille (coif optional), preferably in a Norse-Viking style to complete my kit. Again, it's mostly to complete my collection and for the cool points that owning maille brings to all WMA lovers.
Can you guys recommend any reputable eBay sellers or other vendors? I don't need riveted (strictly speaking, that's not Viking period anyway), so if I can get a decent maille hauberk for <$150 that would be awesome.

Rivitted isn't viking period?
News to me, although you may be right. I was under the impression (erroneous or otherwise) that butted maille was a modern invention...
Jake, where did you find this info?

No source, I just recalled reading that riveted maille came in later. Having looked it up on trusty Wikipedia, I can see that I was mistaken. I'm probably thinking of butted maille, or I could be getting Alzheimers early.
Haubergeon-length would be perfect, by the way.

I got mine from Panther Trading. $180 with the head piece for low gage butted alluminum. Rivited will run about $800 last time I looked.

No that is not the one. The headpiece on mine is seperate. I think I have a lower gage too. They may have discontinued it. In anycase, I don't like the one they have now. Don't rush, keep searching.
Mine weighs 40 lbs in total. So that is something for you to consider. It is not so heavy if you wear it with a thick belt around your waist. That will support a lot of the weight at your hips. 40 lbs is a bit on the heavy side for most people though.

Aside from padding and maybe some leather, it'll be all the weight I'm carrying. I won't be taking long hikes in mail or anything.
Tsafa, has anyone ever told you that you're the man? I'd have probably bought the first thing that looked good if you hadn't told me what to look for. Thanks, man.
EDIT: I've looked around a lot over the past couple days, and I've been having a lot of trouble finding anything lower than 16 gage for chainmail. It seems to be the standard for "functional" chainmail. I've seen 18 gage as well.
EDIT EDIT: Immediately after editing, I saw some aluminum armor in 14 gage. That's the lowest I've seen anywhere. No luck for steel.

Holy...$97 for mail? Is this for real? Anyone ever dealt with these guys? Dude, if this is legit...THANKS! They seem pretty high on their prices and I've found better prices for swords at armsofvalor.com, but this definitely looks to be worth looking into for yourself. I prefer some kind of plate to maille but to each his own. Good luck and search realarmorofgod.com if you want to see more information on the board here. Make sure you set back for 180 or 365 days. They are also selling off their lorica musculata plates for 95 as well.

Plate is awesome...Windlass's offering is especially amazing. However, as I've said in another thread, my aim is to go all-out for an 8th-11th century Viking era getup. Plate is also waaaaaay beyond my budget.
I might check out that Roman armor too.

I like the one on the site that Dan posted. Flattend rivited mail $ 424. Made for SCA fighting, so you know it is designed to take punishment. It is the best price for rivited mail I have seen. The site is hard to navigate. Here is a direct link. sussen.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/product57.html

Definitely a good price for riveted mail. Can't deny that it looks properly Vikingish. It's time to grow out my hair and beard, they should be long enough by Christmas.
While riveted mail is awesome, and $425 is a very manageable price, what do you (Tsafa) think of the company that Centurion posted? Like we talked about, if and when I get around to joining the SCA I probably won't be fighting in mail, so butted works fine. Does it looks good to you? I really still don't know what is best.
EDIT: I think it's only proper to give a big 'thank you!' to everyone who's offered advice and links. I really had no idea where or what to look for when I started this thread.

You can't go wrong for $100. Mind you the Coif is not included. You might as well pay the extra $20 and get that too. I am pretty sure that it is just as good as mine which I paid near $200 a few years back. 16 gage is pretty good. But that is only a measure of thickness not hardness. I definetly looks realistic enough and it will give you the feel of fighting in mail. This is good for Renaisance fairs, costume parties and that sort of thing. You can't fight in this though. The first slash down you body with a rattan sword will bust the rings apart and they will be all over the place. Zink/alluminum rings are too soft for impact. They do make butted rings for fighting but they are much harder (and expensive). People use mail avantails instead of gorgets. It draps off the bottom of your helmet. There is really no other point in wearing mail in the SCA. The weapons don't have edges so you can't get cut. That is really the main purpose of mail. The gambeson that is worn underneath is for softening the blows. A lot of guys fight with just a gambeson protecting their torso. Fighting in a gambeson alone has historic truth to it too. I would buy the $100 mail if I was you. There is plenty of other things for you to spend the rest of your money on. Plus how often will you wear it? If you plan on fighting in the SCA you will be spending about $500 for starter armor and weapons, so save your money. BTW, sere are some cool gambesons: www.medievalcollectibles.com/functional-gambesons-arming-wear-padded-shirt-735.htmlTry to get one with arming points at the shoulders, elbows and forarms. It helps keep the rest of the armor in place.

Ok, I just ordered the coif and mail set on Friday. Shipping was mind-blowing, but the total still came out to a hell of a lot less than you'd regularly pay for mail and a coif ($170 TOTAL versus $250 + ~$75 coif + shipping). I'll reserve judgement for when it arrives, of course, but so far it sounds like an awesome deal. When I get a few spare bucks I'll look into getting a gambeson. I'll let you guys know my impressions of it when it arrives.

Yeah, It doesn't look too bad. The site says it's Zinc Plated carbon steel, so that should be strong enough for most things. I just might have to buy one. I wonder how long the deal will stay for...
