Zombie threads are attacking! So we really are out of time. Seriously, the best speedy armor you can improvise for melee weapons is layers of heavy canvass and wool. Flat LED computer screens can be attached for surprising amounts of resistance as well. Add a baseball bat and a trash can lid shield and you're good to go. If you have no trash can lid, an old shoe will work as an improvised buckler. Just stick your hand in it and grab the laces as a handle.

Aaaand ... now we know why *shields* were the overwhelming, ubiquitous form of "armor" in the pre-firearms era. Quick to make, easy to put down or discard and be unencumbered, and needing little to no customisation--but remarkably effective. (Between riot-worthy varieties and even now a few types effective against blasts and some firearms with specialised modern materials, some even making a modest modern comeback.)
