Tom and I have been recently stepping up the level of our sparring. We've been practicing for over two years in WMA and for years before that in other martial arts. Until earlier this evening, we'd yet to have any serious injury. We were sparring harder than we ever have been tonight. We used the same old fencing masks and thick leather gloves that have saved us so many times from broken knuckles and really bad bruises. We were about to order, and now we're definitely going to order, some of these: www.copsplus.com/prodnum4895.phpThis is why: And Side By side with my left: I'm not telling everyone this so that my training methods can be trashed either. I can already imagine what the SFI community would say: "Look at that dumb kid, playing with things he knows nothing about, THIS IS WHY YOU NEED TO GET AN INSTRUCTOR!" And all the other things that they might jump on. I trust this crowd to be a little more mature. I AM an instructor. I've taught this stuff. I've beaten other WMA instructors in both theory and practice. And I don't blame my system - Tom and I just got carried away and pushed our training beyond what we had safety gear for. This was just a once in a million accident - Tom's sword was coming in and I didn't move fast enough. The very tip of his sword hit the very tip of my little finger of my right hand. I'm not going to go crazy and start recommending over the top solutions like ultra heavy duty and expensive armor and ridiculously faux boffer imitators. All I'm going to say is that if you're going to spar full speed - things like this can happen, and thick, double-layered cowhide gloves, while very good at protecting the hands, are not impervious to things like this. Just thought I'd let everyone know.

Adam, I applaud you for posting this. I completely agree with your assessment that "stuff happens" when you want to train to a realistic level. The fact that this (really minor) injury is your first seems to be a testament to your and Tom's skill levels and control. And Chopchop nailed it. Damn I bet that's throbbing!

What are you using for training swords? Wooden wasters? Look into Lance Chan's simulators.

Gah. That's quite the injury - I'm glad that the SBG community is more accepting than SFI; joined SFI but haven't looked back since I came here.

Ooh, reminds me of the time I got my finger caught in a sliding van door. Now that hurt!
You know Adam , instead of buying those super gloves for $60+, you could just pick out a good pair of hockey gloves. They do about the same thing, while still allowing your full control of your wrists and hands. (Thought I think you'll have to wait for the finger function to return.)
You can usually pick them up new or used at your local sporting goods store.

We use steel sword for training so we NEVER go without helmets, steel gloves and padded doublets...still as we prefer full contact fights there are some bruises and scratches In the beggining of my adventure with western martial arts I did some sparring without any protection.Result-damaged nail(had to be teared out by a doctor) and a headshot with longsword.I was lucky that I slowed down the blade with my shield.I have a nice scar under my hair on my head.It was a deep cut...Since then I never practice without helmet.

We just have to be prepared for full plate armour bohurts and duels Especially bohurts are hardcore. In fact everything except thrusting and atacking eyes and groin are allowed...People use maces, halberds, two handed axes... You are dead when you fall.(New people can be shocked when they hear veterans teaching others-"hit your oponent in the back of his knee..no armour there. He would go down immidiately") pl.youtube.com/watch?v=VeXPsSer0zc&mode=related&search=This is a movie from this years bohurt in Grunwald...unfortunatelly Poland lost with Eastern guests(Belarus,Russia...)I didn't participate this year-I wait for a closed helmet(my barbuta isn't safe enough). We met those soldiers with polleaxes during battle reenactment next day-and fight was pretty hard too(not as hard as in bohurt but I have some dents in my 2,5mm hardened steel helmet from halberd )

That looked really intense. And confusing... alot of people swinging and smashing, and I especially appreciated the peasants with digital cameras around the edge...

Just got back from the doctor... after it only got worse overnight(read: Swelling increased and spread down the finger, as did the icky blue color) I figured I should get it checked out.
My doctor told me to go right to the ER to get the pressure relieved, even refunded my co-pay.
At the ER, they burned a hole in the nail and slit the skin so the blood could drain. They also x-rayed it...
Turns out I bifurcated the bone in my pinky... now I'm home with a nice prescription to vicoden...
I have copies of the x-rays... I'll post one up soon.

Yay! Painkillers!!!!
Did they give you an anesthetic, before they burned a hole in your finger?

Nope... they just kinda came in with the little burny-thing and did... a most curious feeling at first, followed by a reintensification of my agony.
But I'm good.
Growing up with three brothers has led me to have a nice high pain threshold.
Now if only I could get over my psychological fear of hypodermic needles...

Hope the healing is swift and sure.
