Guys, with all love, respect and appreciation extended to all participants in this thread..... is anyone actually even reading the posts? :? As far as I can tell, our OP (Salvatore, not Judosailor) is no longer even considering the Skyjiro due to intelligently stated advice offered thus far, and yet people continue to Skyjiro-bash pointlessly in an attempt to sway him further. I agree that Skyjiro is not on par with equally-priced brands (Sorry, Judo- I loved your review, though!) but I think that point has been made.
As I attempted to state subtly before, this is now the time for objective and informed opinions to be offered on the swords that DO fall into the OP's guidelines of what he is looking for. We've already identified a number of them, including the Ronin Elite, Hanwei Bamboo Mat (among other high-end Hanweis, of course), and a Budo in the classifieds (although a standard Budo does not fit the OP's parameters due to the wait which is unfortunately untenable). I wish I were informed first-hand on these options, but I have never handled a katana that cost more than $300 and as such my opinions are secondhand at best. Does anyone have more constructive info to offer? All I can say is; "Bamboo Shiny! Budo SHINIER!" or some such.
Thanks, all...

lol. I get it.... sounds like 'Rickyleet'... or maybe I don't get it and I just made that up entirely on my own. :? Either way, it's funny! I was referencing the Ronin Katana (RK) Elite line that is so often called the Ronin Elite, so I apologize for any confusion. Now back to your regularly programmed discourse on katana. -Slayer

Why, Aussie? WHY?!?!?! Now my heart shall be forever broken. Oh well. I'll be content with watching and waiting a year or two until I can swing something of that price point. Salv- there's your answer, man! -Slayer

They've been in for a while and I think were sold out pretty quickly. Oh and I usually see people mentioning the ronin elite as the dojo elite, ronin elite, RD elite so that caught me off guard haha. Had to go on Ricky's website just to make sure he didn't just come out with a test run of the RK elite and I missed it. Wouldve been sad.
We have a budo that is cottontail customized here in classified. I think that's probably the best valued sword the OP can get right now. A budo done by bunny? GOLD. (Although that sword did give him a bad cut that nearly ended cottontail tsukamaki soooooo...could be cursed haha)
Also, I do also say that the OP should get either a budo, or any of the other suggested blade and learn from it. Then if he still wants to, he can get a skyjiro and have an informed review of it compared to another sword in that price range that is already in good grace. Or maybe someone else should take a shot and get that mid range skyjiro and compare it.....people needs to know

I understand. It makes sense and you own one. And of course no one wants to here bad things about the item they bought. I feel the same way. Facts tell it all and in this case all the facts are about the way this company conducts business. Unfortunately that is a big role. But I made up my mind and a ronin will suit me. Part of the reason I wanted the sky jiro was cause they were close and I could inspect the blade befor handing over my money. And I'm sure It's a great blade. I like the fact that ronin is a solid piece. Question. Could I change a tsuba on a ronin elite. Or do they not allow customizing

I do not know if Ronin offers customization options, but honestly, changing out the tsuba is probably the simplest and easiest 'do it yourself' customization for a katana. There are many reputable tsuba sellers, so perhaps you could do it yourself if all else fails? Would you be willing to post a link to the Ronin you have in mind? I'm not familiar with many of their models and would be interested to see what you've selected. Thanks, -Slayer

I'm shocked that customized budo hasn't sold... what a nice piece. Anyway that skyjiro blade could be a fine sword... so who is gonna take the plunge and buy one??? Anybody.....anybody..... Bueller.....Bueller.....?:-)

I want it a lot but I think it's better if bunny owns it....his blood went into that one haha. Which ronin were you thinking of btw?
Also ronin is known for having bad fittings but great blade so if you want something fancy, it's good to buy your own fittings and either learn to mount them (some wood work and welding) or have someone mount it for you. With things are right now, having fittings mounted by an experienced person is about a month wait. @slayer, changing the tsuba is not easy at all. You would have to either find a tsuba that fits your blade or put in some work to do so. The height of the tsuba means you might also have to put in another set of seppa to make them fit shave a bit off your tsuka if it's too big and the tang hole doesn't line up properly. The width of the spine and blade does play a lot into this.

At what point does mounting the koshirae involve welding? I've never heard of it, but, if you know something I don't, which is highly possible, please share.

I understand. I came on this thread with less knowledge. But gained exp. thanks. I said it before. I'm satisfied with the ronin elite. Look I'm gonna spend the money for the elite over the pro. Buy purchasing the higher katana I will understand what evryone is talking about. I know you guys are trying to help me. I'm not giving off any vibe that I do not want any opinions here. I would not of asked in the first place. I know the pro and elite are pretty much the same when it comes to the tsuka and tsuba. So I'll go alittle more for the blade too.

Welding was not the right term haha...what I meant was to melt a piece of copper in when the tsuba hole is too large, and in my head the only term that came out was welding. Anyway, good luck on your venture and hopefully you'll have enough left over to upgrade the fittings a bit.

Sounds like you've figured out what you want, Salv! I look forward to hearing your thoughts when you order/receive it... Marc and Sean's opinions of this blade were high enough that I'm positive it's superb. Remember.... pics or it didn't happen! -Slayer

I was just looking at the . Man they are nice but I don't know how to get ahold of anyone. Nor get info on the different models for pricing. And they still say sold out. There has to be a phone number. My next question. Ronin elite vs blade at same level. I never really looked at up until now cause there was never any around. Can I contact Ricky on sbg.

Did you see all the posts about the for sale right now? There's a really nice customized one in the classified section that you could order if you prefer it to the Ronin. I can't speak for Budo vs Ronin Elite.... both are great, but that's all I know. -Slayer

Dadaochen is Rickys forum name...and he does a cutting comparison between a budo and a hanwei bamboo mat(not a ronin elite) on you tube. :-) The budo makes the bamboo mat look like a blunt instrument...and the bamboo mat is known as a beastly tough sword:-)

You don't have to do that. If the hole isn't too much bigger than the tang, you can peen it.
