And few of them are actually "effective" That vid looked more like some poorly choreographed Kung Fu demonstration...a really bad one at that...

Ramm: it depends on your level of competence how effective your strikes and attacks are, look at the shaolin monks their spinning attacks are anything but ineffective. I'f you've ever taken a reverse spinning strike from a competent bo staff handler you will know how effective they can be. With the right spinning strike you can break someone's neck because you get so much momentum. I imagine if someone executed a reverse spinning strike with a bat'leth they would decapitate their opponent.
The vid was a poorly choreographed Kung Fu demo, find a well choreographed one or watch some of jet li's earlier movies.

Anyway, we're looking for someone who can figure out a way to make the Bathleth work.

I classify fighting forms as two-handed, two-weapon, sheild and missle. Within each category I find that the weapons will have many similar characteristics. Example shield-sword will be similar to shield-axe and shield-mace. Bastard-sword will be similar to poleaxe, pike or spear. Two-axes will be similar to two-sword. And archer and slinger both consider the effects of velocity, air-resistance, gravety, range, visibility and line-of-sight. Of course within each category different weapons will favor speed, range, distance, velocity, power more then others .
The batleth is a two-handed weapon. So I would forget all the TV/movie nonsence and use it as a two-handed sword. I would follow Lichenuers principals and discover from there what works best and what does not.

I think you would have a bit of a difficult time using a batleth as a two handed sword...but then again who knows...as far as the TV/movie nonsense I wouldn't disregard it entirely Star Trek was one of the few scifi series that actually did do their home work at least while Roddenberry was alive.

I have seen it used as a two-handed weapon on Star Trek. The lower grip had enough room for two hands. Of course not all designs would be the same. I don't think batleth would be better then a two-handed sword, but if that is the weapon I had to work with I would use it primarily as a two-handed sword and use half-swording tactics more then usual.

I worked with sheet steek and re-bar,so a bat'leth would be under 12lbs. useing 6/16 sheet steel one could cut a weapon keeping it light and strong. The center grip would balance the blade giving good control.the weapons listed by wraith prove it's useable. as a malee weapon it could kill horses, cleave armour, hell it would litaraly fillet a man in a duel with practice you could snap a spear shater shields break most swords .I've handled the stainless steel models and most say they are tuffer than one would think and lighter. as a viable weapon It would be exalent. with study of wriath's kung-fu examples it would be a diffacult weapon to defeat to say the least
