When your talking Star Wars tec we could be on this for years. I personally would pay anything for a real lightsaber. And a starfighter to boot. As far as sheilds the ones I remember from the movies and the games could not stand up to a lightsaber. But hey anything is possible in that universe. I have a question though for a Star Wars melee weapon closer to reality. What would pay for a Vibroblade or Vibrosword?

I really don't get the principle behind those things. They have a power cell in the grip, which causes the blade to vibrate at supersonic speed. So what, it's kinda like a super electric carving knife, without the plug?

They also emitted some kind of energy shielding (for short time use against lightsabers). But that was a game and in George Lucas's universe things change alot.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I remember reading somewhere that they were made out of cortorsis ore or something that stopped lightsabers.
Anyhow, to answer tsafa's question, I'd wield it like a katana. The technique used in the original Star Wars trilogy was a combination of Kendo and Iaido, which makes sense since George Lucas was inspired by the movies of Akira Kurosawa. There's alot of parallels between Star Wars and samurai movies.
P.S.
I have a theoretical question regarding lightsabers. What would happen if you dropped one that didn't have a cut-off switch? Would it burn through to the centre of the Earth, and be crushed, or what?

Actually the story line from Kurasawa's Hidden Fortress pretty much IS Star Wars

P.S. I have a theoretical question regarding lightsabers. What would happen if you dropped one that didn't have a cut-off switch? Would it burn through to the centre of the Earth, and be crushed, or what? From what i've read about lightsabers, they automatically switch off if you don't hold a button down. ("dead man's switch" i think it's called). For those of you wondering how they throw the lightsabers in the star wars movies without them shutting off? Simple, they just keep the button pressed down by using the force. For more information: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LightsabersEDIT: i now saw that you wrote "done that didn't have a cut-off switch". To my knowlege the beam itself is only a few micromillimetres wide, so it would probably stop once it reaches the hilt. unless stays that way for a long enough time to evaporate the earth beneath it so it would start to sink into the ground.

So why bother fighting with them?
Why not attack each other from miles away with flying lightsabers? Imagine a lightsaber weidler attacking you like a swordsman from miles away.
I think they have a locking switch to keep the blade up.

I've always wondered, how the Jedi could block laser's being blasted at light speed at them with there lightsabers? But whatever besides that I for the most part enjoy the movies although not completely. I don't think that its as great as some people believe though.

Technically, the blasters used in Star Wars don't move at the speed of light.
There's a difference between blaster and lasers. Lasers project a beam of light at the speed of light. The beam is continuous, and once you switch it off, it stops instantly.
Blaster woork basically by projecting energy through a gas that is then compressed and shot out of the barrel. They don't move at the speed of light, but do move pretty fast. They also have a limited range, unlike lasers which go on forever. The plasma weapons in Halo work the same way.
I sound like a total Star Wars nerd, but the technology isn't that fantastical. It may actually be plausible. The plasma weapons in Halo work the same way.

As I recall, Lightsabers don't just last forever - they actually do need to be recharged or have their 'batteries' replaced. As for why they don't burn their wielders, well...
A lightsaber is not static - It's a 2 meter or so beam, continuously bouncing back and forth from the hilt and a spot projected about a meter away from it's emitter - that way it doesn't have to keep burning energy to keep itself running. The only time energy is lost is when it comes in contact with matter, wherein the vast amounts of energy in the beam are transferred into that matter which in most cases just causes the atoms to un-bond from each other. With very very dense materials it can slowly melt them (blast doors etc), and with materials with particularly strong atomic bonds it can bounce off(those staff things you see those uber-droids wielding in Ep. 3). Since the blade is in constant contact with the air, some energy is lost into that, which you see as the colored halo around the blade itself that most people mistake for the blade itself.
And the comments on blasters and lasers were correct. This however, made me cry:
"I'll just take my lightsabres and go play over in the corner with the other trekkies then, eh?"
...defaming a great vision by associating it with the comparative junk George Lucas pumps out is simply a killing offense.
Just so we're clear, there's a HUGE difference between Star Trek(awesome) and Star Wars(hit or miss - mostly miss).

Hey now, I've always loved Star Wars, and nothing can ever change that.
Though I still think it's wierd that Harrison Ford was the only person who's career wasn't destroyed by those movies.

Well I guess the Jedi can use the force as a "force Field" to protect them from the heat? Yes? No?
I would just wait till I saw them for sale in a store front window, throw a rock through the glass, grab a handful and run! I don't condone stealing, but c'mon...it's a light sabre! It's perfectly justifiable!

Go turn on a blowtorch. Burn something, heck melt something made of steel if it makes you feel better. Are you being incinerated for being within a few feet of the torch? Of course not. Go ahead and hold your hand very close to the flame - now it's getting warmer. Within a few inches? getting very very hot I presume. Have you spontaneously combusted yet? Let me know if you have, then we'll talk about Jedi dying from the heat output of a lightsaber.

Well, you have to realize that those that where the jumpsuits are only Starfleet members - not even a significant fraction of the Federation.
Starfleet, as much as they try to avoid it, is basically the military branch of the federation - they police federation space, they enforce federation regulations. They are called upon when enemies show up wanting to start a fight. There has to be some form of uniformity in an organization like that. Hence - the jumpsuits - practical, breathy, comfortable. I'm not sure about ToS, but TNG and post, the colors specify which area in which the officer operates : Red is Command, Brown is Operations(security, tactical, navigation, etc.), and Blue is Science(medical, and others). Only the officers wear the suits - the noncomissioned officers aren't bound by it.
Anyway, as for the plain colored jumpsuits as uniform and not something fancier - remember they're meeting weird aliens across the galaxy - they need to keep it practical, basic, and neutral for the most part.

As for lightsabres, that are cool, but I'd take an x-wing or a-wing fighter any day...or just a "fully operational" death star
