Really? He's like exactly what I picture as Conan. But admittedly, I've only read a tiny bit of the stories so maybe my perception is off. I didn't know he had done any acting. I went and read about the Scorpion King 2 movie that he was in. Wow, got some really terrible reviews, guess he can't act. Shame, he interviews so well.

Yeah, I've seen both Scorpion King movies--the Rock is a way better actor than Couture. I'd really like to see an actor in the Conan role rather than a muscle guy--actors can muscle up but muscles can't very often learn to act. A couple guys come to mind: Karl Urban and Jason Statham. Urban's over 6' while Statham "only" 5' 10". I think both have good enough acting skills and can bring intensity to the role. And both have proven they have the physicality necessary.

Randy's not that bad, really...I think that it was a direct-to-DVD release is what ultimately hurt that movie as far as the critics were concerned; I liked it. It was an action flick, and it delivered on that very well. The guy who played young Matthias (Rock's character in the previous one) was almost dead-on in his delivery...if it weren't for the fact that you already know Dwayne Johnson was huge by 18, you could believe this kid coulda been him, or his kid brother. Having said that, I don't see Randy as Conan...his voice is too soft spoken for it.
I disagree on Karl Urban or Jason Statham...ok, MAYBE Karl Urban, but he'll have to muscle up better than Kevin Sorbo did for Hercules in order to be believable. He can handle a sword and he's reasonably tall; but definitely not for Jason Statham. Not only is he too short, but he can't seem to drop the Cockney accent, no matter what movie he's in. That wouldn't gibe well with a pre-Hyperborean age Cimmerian...as far as I think.
I agree with pogo, tho...it should be an actor who muscles up rather than a musclehead trying to act, a la Ralph Moeller, who couldn't act his way out of a paper bag. He's good in the supporting roles he's done (thinking Gladiator) but definitely not leading man material.
Besides, let's not forget, Conan's description is as a black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, thief, reaver, slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, come to tread the jeweled thrones o the earth beneath his sandalled feet.
I just want him to be believable, that's all.

I'd rather see a muscle-guy taught to act than an actor muscled up. Gerard Butler gut pretty big for 300, Hugh Jackman for Wolverine, and Kurt Russell for Soldier, but I've never seen an actor bulk up to what I would consider "Conan sized". That kind of size requires a lot of dedication and time. I think it would be easier to find a guy who's already big and has some ability and coach him in acting. I frankly don't think it's all that hard to act if there is a good script and good direction. Look at the first Conan movie. The main characters were a bodybuilder, a surfer, and a dancer (Sandahl Bergman had acted some but not a lot) and I thought they were all very believable (also another bodybuilder and a football player in supporting roles). If an actor, at least not a well known actor. Can you imagine Lord of the Rings with Tom Cruise and Angelina Jolie? Is anyone even talking about making this movie anymore anyway?

If Tom Cruise or Angelina Jolie had have been in LOTR, it would not have been nearly as good as it was.

I'm not making any judgments about Tom Cruise or Angelina Jolie as actors. Only that a well known face in a fantasy role can take away from the fantasy and make the movie significantly less likable.

I had no idea Tom Jame was only 5'10"....that's so weird. 5'10 is a perfectly respectable height, kinda tall even. For a man I mean.

IMDB has Roland Kickinger rumored to be in the role. He was the Terminator robot in Terminator Salvation.
As for Arnie being believable as Conan--I didn't find him that believable--he was okay but frankly I think we got lucky that he made that at the beginning of his career, before he became a cartoon character. The role was written to minimize the need for him to do much "acting". Conan is supposed to be way smarter than he came across in that film. I still cringe a little whenever he delivers a line in any movie.
I've been hoping they wouldn't go body builder for the role--body builders just don't look warrior-ish to me. Football players look more like warriors their muscle is fully useable and they can move well--body builders tend to look kinda clumsy. Terel Owens has the build I'd like to see on Conan. There's a thought--would people accept a Conan who wasn't caucasian? Imagine a young Michael Clarke Duncan as Conan.

T.O. is still cut to the exteme, the kinda build you get from lots of carefully planned body building, you can see every single muscle on the guy. I would find the type of build you see on the 'Worlds Strongest Man' type contests to be more approprate to old school warriors. Take my man Magnus for example: magnusvermagnusson.com/about/

I couldn't access the full link for the first URL (there's something up with the page) but I saw the Atlantean sword and it looks really neat. I've always been told that Albion blades (although a bit pricey) are a good quality brand. The engravings are always cool It kind of gives it that personal touch.

I just looked this up at IMDB. It seems the directer (Marcus Nispel) that has been picked for this movie has mostly done videos. He also did the iffy Pathfinder movie and a pair of horror movies. Might as well scrap this project now before it gets any worse

As awesome as Magnus is, and I've watched a fair amout of WSM to know, I don't think a warrior would look like him. I'd have to agree with pogo on this one that a football player type would be more likely. It depends on what kind of weapons are being used of course, but a warrior has to move fast and react quickly to his opponent. On one of the early WSM competitions, one of the events was a sumo wrestling match. There were a couple football players (sorry, don't remember which) in the competition that were getting there clocks cleaned by the big weightlifter types, until this event came up. The football players won hands down!
I agree that a bodybuilder type is not likely as a warrior either. Arnold was told to tone his muscles down a bit before he got the part. He was a natural selection though. He was very popular after his "Pumping Iron" movie. He was good looking, confident, and many were intrigued by his accent. Why wouldn't Hollywood want him? The general public mostly wouldn't know what a warrior-type looked like, but he was big and popular so...

I don't think the comical muscles rippling thing works. If i were going to cast conan it would be someone like the guy who played Bulliwyf in 13th warrior, I think he is one of the most believable warriors I have seen in a movie.

You speak of Vladimir Kulich...who I definitely could see as being the mythical Buliwyf (Beowulf). He had an aura, a presence of command if you will. Someone like him would definitely do Conan justice. Too bad Mr. Kulich is too old for the part.
