Any movement such as this, these days, is helped by global internet contacts, the sense that you are not a lone (nut) hobbyist. ;D To be fair, Giraud's is one of a number of groups pushing toward Hyborian-era reenactment. Groups? I guess at this stage we are in the same "group". Other sites: www.hyboriantales.com/www.geocities.com/baldurstrand/hyboria/I believe there are others with the same inspiration. -Red Nails

That was a very good story =). Actually very few of the real Conan stories were bad. Robert E Howard used to say that Conan would come visit him and tell him the stories as he wrote them down. He was a pretty disturbed guy...but he created what's probably the single most recognizable and admired fantasy heroes ever. Cris

Dirk Blackman is on the writing team for the new Conan movie. NEW Conan movie? News to me... Whoever will replace Arnold has some pretty big biceps to fill.

Conan Movie Rumor Blog:360.yahoo.com/itazura94043It's a "reboot" rather than a "remake" of Milius' film. The intent is to go back to the original tales (with greater fidelity than Milius managed) and launch a series of films of Conan's adventures.

Not really, maybe he just knew his character that well that it appeared that way. Many authors know their characters so well that they have discussions and things with them and more often that not characters get out of hand and the author doesn't even see some things coming.

Many authors know their characters so well that they have discussions and things with them and more often that not characters get out of hand and the author doesn't even see some things coming. Yeah =). I know not really lol. He really was a pretty upset guy though. Lots of internal issues. On another note...I'd been thinking about who would make a good Conan for the movie. Drew a blank for a good long while to...it's a really difficult part if you don't just want another Arnold (who really didn't fit Conan well to begin with...but who I loved in the movies anyways). Then it hit me the other night when I was watching Blade III. Dominic Purcell (Drake/Dracula). Did some searching and sure enough, a good number of other people think so too. I mean, he's not too 'beefcake', either in features or build...and he can act (at least enough to pull off a brooding, more intelligent/instinctive Conan than Arnold I believe). I'll post up some pictures and you guys can tell me what you think? A few things to remember first though. Conan was BIG, but it was more in presence than musculature...6'4", probably 230-240lbs or so tops. 'Pantherish' and 'wolfish' were the terms most used to describe him. Never 'gorilla on steroids'. He also never had the 2' long hair Arnold had...it's always described as shoulder length and square cut across his forehead. It's also black not auburn. Now the pictures: Anyhow...I don't think he's 'perfect'...but man, he's better than the Rock or any of the other suggestions I've seen tossed up. What do you guys think? Cris

Hmm... Well, I saw Blade 3... and he, like everyoine eles in the movie was pretty much horrible. I liked Ryan Reynolds in it, but I like him in everything. I'd go gay for Ryan Reynolds. Ehem. TMI, I suspect. Anyway... your boy Dominic looks like he could pull off the part from a pure apparence standpoint. I'd have to see him in something other then that awefull Blade 3 to judge his acting tho.

Did any of you know that Arnie auditioned for the role of The incredible Hulk for the television series starring the late Bill Bixby?
I would rather have functional versions of those swords, personally.
However, I did not know that they were talking about making new Conan movies. I would love it. I know that there was s short lived series starring Ralph Moeller. I never got to see any of those.

Did anyone see Ralf Moeller in : The Viking Sagas. I think thats what it was called. There was a cool viking sword type movie with him, and Sven Ole Thorsen - He played Thorgrim in Conan the Barbarian.
I liked the Arnie movies alot. But when I read the books the description of Conan prevented me from ever visualising Arnie as Conan. For that matter I can't see any current actor as Conan. But I can see myself as Conan. Yeah!

I like that guy, he's been in a bunch of Arnold's movies. I think they used to be roommates or something back in Arnold's competition days. Was in Gladiator too as the retired gladiator who comes back to fight Maximus and the tigers.
Brenno the Barbarian! I can totally see that, especially in about two weeks or so.

Kevin Sorbo mightn't be a bad choice for Conan, if he could act! He played Kull too; another REHoward character. Just so B grade unfortunately.
Jessie Marunde (Worlds Strongest Man Runner up from USA) would be awesome if he was still alive,...
How about Roland Kickinger? He's actually not that bad an actor. He played Arnie in "See Arnold run". He'd need to grow his hair and a big 5 O'Clock shaddow to harden him up. A few dozen scars...

Your next Conan: I like this guy for Conan better than Kevin Sorbo. No offense Brenno but I never thought he was even a good fit in appearance for Hercules lol, much less the crappy acting (for the genre). This kid, would be good for a VERY young Conan, 16/17yrs old tops. Conan was always very old/mature appearing for his age. The biggest problem with either of them is they're not...grim/mean/brooding/angry/primal looking enough lol. It's going to need a very rough looking individual to pull it off, while still being 'good looking' so to speak...and within a very narrow range of features. Difficult part to cast for sure. Particularly for a Hollywood who casts people like Brad Pitt as a Vampire, or worse, Tom Cruise as one in the same movie (particularly a 6' tall one lol). Ahh well, we'll see =). Cris

To get back slightly on topic, I think that this sword is very "conanish" without being over the top - ie a blade that could actually be used: www.darksword-armory.com/1523.html

I don't know...I'm not much a fan of the cross on that one at all. Back off topic... Anyone remember the old Miles O'Keefe Tarzan movie? I think he'd have been the perfect Conan. Not too much brawn, still very muscular but lean, and still BIG. He had the right kind of face too, just needed the black hair. A few examples: lostinthepast.shunpike.net/a/tar/ape010.jpg[/img]lostinthepast.shunpike.net/a/tar/ape035.jpg[/img]Back on topic...I think that a Conan sword should be more Celtic, or even Norse than that one. Not saying those should be the only influences, but I see a much more broad bladed (meaning little profile taper) weapon than any of the standard 'Oakshott' Types. Something with a well defined, and wide fuller. To be honest, it's going to be tough to 'one up' the Atlantean, or the Father's sword even. The only thing either of those really needed to be useful designs was proper distal taper and better overall blade geometry. Let me see if I can find some examples of what I mean... Or... A bit overdone, imagine the hilt more like this: I know those are strictly Viking type swords (of which by the way, I'm not particularly fond), but I think the blades fit the bill far more than a well polished renaissance/midieval blade. My opinion of course. That's one of the things that makes this so damn hard...we've all got such strong opinions of what it 'should' be. I just hope it doesn't end up some generic pile of crap from trying to please everyone! Cris
