Several have asked for a review of the new Generation 2 Ranger sword. I am sorry to report that I haven't been able to give it a good wringing out, so my impressions are still only "initial" feelings. But I did get to take some pictures of it, so I thought I would go ahead and share a few to give folks a feel for the upgrades. Closeup of the new grip and narrowed guard I like the pretty flowers, but the sword's even nicer. BTW, the blade is resting just on the PoB in this picture. Just after I snapped this shot the sword tipped backward and fell off the stand, imbedding the back of the pommel in the damp ground. But no harm done.

To best appreciate the newer guard, I think you should post pictures of this one side by side with the old one... but other than that I second the above setiments...

Hm...I still think it's too thick for my liking. I think that reduction of the guard could move the PoB up (I think that it is way too short now). Very nice looking though despite my complaints! I like the grip ring

Looking very nice. I think an increase on the credit card is in the works as I don't know how long I can wait to get my hands on this sword. The changes make it look alot nicer than the original IMO though.

I received one of the first production run of the LL Ranger sword (#054)with an improper heat treat. It looks a bit different (cocobolo handle sections (one of which split after about 6 months). In my first cutting with it, the blade bent slightly (to this day I am still convinced that it was a good cut) after the water bottle went flying about 20 yards. After the lower section of wood split, I ended up re-hilting it and turning it into a hand-and-a-half. This was a project I posted in another forum and was immediately chastised for the effort (but it's..... ok. I see the therapist only twice a week now). Anyhoo, here's a pic:

Hi Martin, Welcome to the forums! Well done overcoming your fears, there's less snobbery here. Tidy DIY, it appears to have an extra bush before the pommel; did you add that? Have a welcome / DIY Karma. Is that Reepicheep in your avatar?

Grip looks too smooth, would not do so well once your hands got sweaty. Another more practical wrap. Pretty sword though.

I added a leather spacer between the spacer ring and pommel. I had to do some serious sanding on the ring in order for it to "flow" into the pommel. That's actually Martin the Warrior from Redwall. Yeah, they are smooth, but they are somewhat tacky. Oiled rather than having lacquer or whatnot. Also perfectly round, kind of like a broom handle. I toyed with the idea of doing a cord and leather wrap.

Plenty of posts on wraps in the customisation section, it's not hard but a little fiddly. Big tip - get the 5 minute epoxy.
We'd normally want an oval shaped grip to help position / angle the blade correctly through a cut. Maybe if you have a dremel you could reshape it?
I like the look of wood. I wanted to try a carved celtic design on a wood handle.
Check these for a little inspiration: /index.cgi?board=swordcustom&action=display&thread=1177974369 /index.cgi?board=swordcustom&action=display&thread=1180548096 /index.cgi?board=swordcustom&action=display&thread=1177176194
I've disclosed some of my findings in grip wrapping at this post: /index.cgi?action=display&board=swordreviews&thread=1166799516&page=2

I really like the pommel on the new ranger sword, but the blade is too short. It just doesn't fit the long pommel in my opinion. I went to the Gen2 site and the POB was around an inch I think (could be wrong as its been a while since I've looked at it).
I mean with a two-handed sword like that, you'd want to have some blade power, right? A perfect POB would be around 4" (not too blade heavy, not too powerless). Also, I wish the blade was more tapered, I think it would really add to the beauty that's already there. ;D
