Hello everyone,
I've been lucky enough to purchase two of the most beautiful production tantos available. They both finally arrived this week (I waited a full 7 days). I bought the Bushido Tanto from SOTE and the Kai Tanto from Hanwei. I'm even more lucky as I got both tantos well below retail price.
The Bushido Tanto and the Kai both blade is made from K120 Swedish powdered steel and diferentially hardened and folded. The Bushi saya beautifully painted and has gold flowers and gold specs in it which gives the saya a metallic appearance. The gold (coated I think) tsuka is a piece of art by itself as it has samurai depicted on both sides of the tsuka.
The Kai Tanto the saya is black laq and has a ocean waves pattern to the metal fittings which also carries onto the tsuka, the tsuka is a plain full same wrap without any ito which only this tanto can get away with. The missing ito actually give this tanto character and adds to the ocean theme, as the ito would hide most of the same. Another piece of art on this tanto is the beautiful blue and white sageo.
Both tantos are made from powdered steel and the hada on these tantos are the closest to nihonto as I can find. I don't like the thick layers of pattern welded steel. I prefer thinner finger print and extremely fine wood type of look to hada (see blade image to know what I'm referring to).
These will only be for display so sorry no cutting and also sorry about the poor quality pics, my bro has my SLR so I had to use my Sony Xperia S (12mp camera). Mobile cameras will never be as good a dedicated cameras.
It's getting late and just taking the pics and uploading took longer than I wanted but as the saying goes every photo has 1000 words so lets let the photos do the talking. This images are medium size to limit the download time. Enjoy
