Seems like 2007 may well be a big year for us sword fans... ;D Yup, Conan will be making a comeback - and while it obviously won't be Senator Schwarzanegger in the lead role, the rumour mill has it that Warner Brothers is quite serious about Bringing this very cool francise of films back in 2007 for a whole new generation of fans! www.moviehole.net/news/20051223_conan_will_be_back_in_2007.htmlI imagine that casting would be pretty hard - and it seems that they are looking for an unknown to do it (after all, that's pretty much how Hollywood discovered Arnie) - but whoever it is will have some (literally) big shoes to fill! I just hope that the official movie sword will be functional! I've always really liked the look of the classic 'Atlantean Sword'. But the only functional one I've seen is the Barbarian Sword by Deeepeka (which isn't bad for a mere $69!): Time will tell I guess. But personally, I can hardly wait to see it!

hm...Albion makes these swords but they are insane in their pricing. Like $2.500 if you can believe that. While depeeka might not be a top notch company, I'd think I'd like a $69 one more! Anywho, ya, I don't think ahhnold could hold a good rep being in politics AND hollywood. would still be cool though, you'd have to admit. Anyway, I might see this one, but I've never really been a conan fan. If the reviews are good though....

A real two hander, you don't see too many of those. This particular design is not my style, I prefer a big crossguard, but its nice to see some alternative sword choices.

Maybe I missed it, but I can not find and statement on ebay regarding the tang and pommol construction for that Atlantian.

I always thought the ring sword captured everything that a Conan size, larger then life, barbarian would want in a sword. Here are the specs from by-the-sword.com MEASUREMENTS: BLADE LENGTH: 32 ¾” HANDLE LENGTH: 13” OVERALL LENGTH: 45 ¾” WEIGHT: 7lb 11oz But I doubt the tang would hold up. A 13" handle is going to recieve a lot of torque stress in any pell work. I think the tang would have to be more then half as thick as the blade itself to make it durable. So we are talking a required 1 inch wide tang from guard to pommol. The same goes for all the barbarian swords pictured above. That is my conclusion based on my pell experiance.

Yeah I cannot wait to see who they pick to play the man himself hehe, or whatever other hot babes might be in it. How could you have barbarian style butt kicking without hot babes(also kicking butt?)? That ring sword is a wallhanger, the tang wouldn't hold up because it is a peice of crap.

also, along with what samsalvati said, the conan PC game is coming out this spring, and form what i have heard, is going to be a Mature rating, only because the Conan universe in itself is all about Killing, Sex and other barbaric pleasures. hopefully the movie will reflect this as well, i would hate to see a PG-13 Conan...

I agree about the PG-13 thing, whitetalon. But I'm guessing the odds are pretty favorable that's the rating they're going for. by far the largest market for this film, from a money-making standpoint at the theatre, will be the 12-21 year-old crowd.
And that's kind of a shame for us. I too would like to see a real kick-butt Conan movie with lots of R-rated realistic action.

Oh, one little piece of Conan trivia I just remembered. This is totally irrelevant, but Robert E. Howard's father, "Doc Howard" was the doctor who delivered my mother when she was born.
Hah!

If their target age group is 12-21 then you will see a LOOOOT a violence and r rated material. Honestly, I felt that, all action aside, The conan films were pretty dull with virtually no acting talent and a penchant for wanton destruction and violence (not that the latter is a bad thing.... ) seriously, Ahnold is not a good actor. He just looks good when blowing things up ;D

thats awesome about your mom shooter, btw how did you find that out? It was one of those funny conversations with my grandmother. I had always been a HUGE Robert E. Howard fan in the 70's. I had maybe 8-10 of his books, some Conan and some others. One day I read that he'd been born and raise as the son of a local doctor in the tiny farming town of Cross Plains, Texas. CLICK! That's where my mom's family is from and grandmother still lives there! I asked my grandmother if she'd known him. She didn't remember the name. I said I'd read he was the son of a local doctor. Her eyes brightened and she said something like "Oh yeah, Ole Doc Howard. He's the one delivered your momma. Yeah...he had a crazy son named Bobby that killed himself back before your mother was born."

And the second Conan was PG-13, and still rocked with good gore and blood and action, and just compensated for outright boobs and sex with SKIMPY SKIMPY SKIMPY SKIMPY outfits:D.

I'm a huge fan of the old Howard books. I was never really happy with the Hollywood version. A bodybuilder just isn't right for the part. Conan should look like more of a bar-room brawller. He wouldn't have to be huge. Even someone like Russell Crowe could pull it off, if they buffed him up a bit, gave him some scars and barbarian hair and so forth. Or Mickey Rourke.
I'm eager to see how they pull it off.

I am a big fan of the old Robert E. Howard books too, and I always thought Arnie didn't fit my mind's eye of how Howard described Conan. If I remember right, he was described as 6'4" with ice blue eyes, long black hair and darkly tanned skin. He had the physique of an NFL linebacker crossed with a panther. I don't know if Russell Crowe could pull it off. Mickey Rourke might, if they used a similar treatment of the one used on him in Sin City to make him look much bigger.
But I am all together in your camp that a good fit for the real R.E. Howard Conan shouldn't be a bodybuilder. I would love it if this movie more closely follows the original books. There's LOTS of good stuff in them for a modern CGI-enhanced movie.
