We have had so many great entrees and the excitement of moving forward with the project is killing me. So if there are not any objections I would like to end the competition on January 15th.

I just thought of something: What happens to the designs that don't win? Are they discarded? are they used for future swords?

We have had so many great designs, I would hate to waist the opportunity to produce them. Currently with all of the entries we have decided to select two winners. The first will come with a scabbard, plaque and a picture and the second (runner up) will come with just a scabbard.
If there are a few that don't win that we really like we will then ask permission from the submitter to make them in the future (and of course they would get one for their design).
Right now my goal would be to produce 3 new swords this year and 3 more in 2008, but with the success with the competition we would like to run one a year forever, or at least until interest dies out.

well if you want, I can submit designs for several years. I found this project to be most enlightening and challenging. I took about 4 - 5 hours on every blade that I designed. While most of my friends think that that was a huge waste of time and I'll never win (even though they said my designs are awesome, their still jerks at times ) I find myself wanting to do more and more of them. And you have full rights to my own designs if you ever want to make them in the future. I'd love to see on of my designs in real life! of course this should probably be given after the fact and over email and such ;D so not yet, at least.

Alright, I've just done quick sketches of designs #s 6,7,8, and 9.
#6 -- similar to #5. type XI blade, but with a brazil nut pommel
#7 -- a messer design with an interesting hilt and hand guard shaped like a sea-shell.
#8 -- a sword with a fishtail pommel and type XV blade
#9 -- a falchion. Plain and simple. This was done for all of the people here that say they want gen2 to make a falchion so I decided that, if this (or #7 for that matter) win, more than just myself will be happy.
#10 --not even started off, but guarunteed to be the bigest, badest one yet.

Well I'm not gonna go all out with 10 different designs, but i've finished a second one(i'm still working on my kukri design which will come later...). It's a singlehander type XIX with style 6 guard and type J pommel. A historical entry to go along with my current fantasy entry. If anyone wants to see it, PM me.

update:
I've scrached #8 because it ended up looked too much like the dodogne sword or albion's castellon. I want my designs to be original. So, #10 is now #9, which in turn is #8. I'll need to make a new #10
I've finished my #6 design and am starting on #7, the messer. I'm done the basic designs and profile views of everyone up to #9.

Adam has some great stuff. I especially like his type XIX which has inspired me a bit. I've changed #9 from a type XVII to a type XIX/XX hybrid. Ends up looking like quite a monster!
Thanks for sharing adam, Your designs are amazing!
update: I need to finish #s 7 and 8, the messer and falchion by monday and submit my designs. The curved swords however, are proving to be very difficult. I use ratios with graph paper to find proper measurments (eg: 1 square = 1.1 in, etc.) but it is a lot harder with curved swords.

I'm submitting two final designs today, one is a small type XVI which i call the 'halfling riding sword', I envision a very warlike hobbit-like creature riding into battle clad like a viking, and wielding a sophisticated sword like this one. It would be a massive one-hander for him, but balances nicely as a smallish one-hander to most normal people. It's got a style 11 cross and type D pommel.
The second is a kukri-inspired blade. I thinned it's profile and elongated it to make it more sinuous, then also added a knuckle guard, to make it somewhat more like a sword and less like a knife. To help shift the forward balance back more over the hilt itself, I offset the blade from the handle by about a half-an inch backwards, which will help tremendously in managing the distribution of mass. I also played with the distal taper to get something that I believe will be very responsive, despite it's large mass for such a small sword. I also added a pommel. I'll send pics of these to anyone who asks via PM.

Hello Adam,
The third one of your designs was at the top of the list, but did not make the cutoff. It is a very nice design, but (I can't speak for the other judges) did not make it because it is very plain and similar to some other designs currently on the market.
Don't worry though it looks like the right choice was made in advancing the Paladin!
