I just got the lastest catalog in the mail from Knights Edge and there's a sticker on the front saying Dec. 21 is the last chance to buy at the 2006 pricing. Apparently even these guys are having to go up. Anyway, I spotted some pretty okay-looking copper bladed swords I thought might be of interest. Valiant Arms is the maker. I think they look pretty cool (at least the blades - I don't know about the hilts!) as far as display items, at least. See what you think: www.knightsedge.com/catalog/34-35.htm

Hey, kristie! Welcome aboard! I agree with you, the blades look pretty decent, but I'm not so sure about the hilts. I'm not very familiar with pre-Bronze Age stuff (or pre-Middles Ages, for that matter ), but no question copper is beautiful. Definitely best used for decoration, though, given copper's softness. I think a properly made bronze blade (with forged edges, etc.) would be my minimum level "user" sword. The additional tin added to make bronze makes a big difference in hardness and toughness. ALong those lines, if you're interested in something in bronze, take a look at Albion's Moat Sale page: www.albion-swords.com/moat.htm. These woulld, of course, require hilting, but home projects can be quite rewarding if you're interested.

Yeah, those copper blades look good, Kristie. The middle one appeals to me. That link Krieg supplied has a bronze blade similar the second one. I like the shape.

Yeah, I was looking at the moat sale stuff last week or so and thougt those bronze blades were nice. The thing is, where do you get the hardware if not from Albion? And how do you know it's going to fit the tang? And I bet the wooden handle pieces would be the hardest part! I think a project would indeed but fun - I just wouldn't know where to start!

Kristie - not sure if you knew, but Knight's Edge is the parent company of Ritter Steel, a functional sword producer that makes swords of, well, questionable quality and durability. But I have heard nothing about these copper-bladed swords. Maybe they are worth the risk?
Karma for the find. Thanks for pointing it out.

Check out the sword making section, and especially some of Brenno's work, to get an idea of what's involved in hilt construction. THere are other styles and methods one could use, but that will give you a basic idea.

rittersteels sword quality is questionable? Why so? Also durability i can't comment on but my housemates sword from them looks like it could cut through a brick wall.

Yeah, Sept, I've heard bad things about Ritter Steel, too. I've never actually ordered from this catalog because of that. It's nice to browse, though. (Thanks for the karma, by the way) But these aren't Ritter, they're Valiant Arms. Know what the word is on them? Probably more of the same type, no? And I don't remember exactly what it was that wasn't good about Ritter, bloodwraith. Probably read it over at another forum. Kriegschwert, haven't looked at the sword making section before. I'll check it out when I get a chance. Karma for the tip!

I don't know whats supposed to be wrong with Ritter Steel other than wild inaccuracy in histrical refernce to their construction. I have 5 of their katana shaped swords and other than being a bit dull out of the box they have been great. They surely take a beating, including their great katana. I've considered ordering one of those copper ones a few times but never had the money when there wasn't something else I wanted more. Don't know about ordering from them but medieval collectibles carries them cheaper. www.medievalcollectibles.com/SearchResult.aspx?KeyWords=copper

I have two Rittersteel blades, a gladius and a katana. I find them bulky but I certainly cannot say they aren't durable. Here's a review of the kat. /index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=1188855457 Valiant Arms appears to come under the Knights edge umbrella to me. Valiant arms, rittersteel, stage steel, looks like same same.

Copied from the bottom of the Knight's Edge home page
Ritter Steel®, Stage Steel®, Knightedge®, and Valiant Arms® are trademarks of Knight Edge Ltd.® Serving the USA and Canada since 1994.
I don't know about the the western swords but I have their Golden Warrior wakizashi here and when I removed the little gold sticker that said "Made in Philippines" from the end of the pommel (? I know thats not the name for the cap on the end of a Katana but this has a solid brass block there) I found the end of the steel tang peened into the brass. I'll try to get a pic later today.
