I recently bought a 2nd hand Hanwei 1st Roman type sword - Mainz pattern. But the width of the blade (just below the wooden guard) measures to only abt 1.88 inches (or 4.8cm)?! Does anyone has any info on historical/authentic Gladius blade width - Mainz pattern- in particular? All along, I thought authentic gladius blade were much wider? That's the impression given me when I browse books; Also, I had a Denix decorative gladius and the blade is hefty & measures to abt 2.5 inches! Thanks~

Larry, yeah that Hanwei one always looked a bit thin to me, tho I'm not real educated in history. Here's a link with some info. www.larp.com/legioxx/gladius.htmlStill a nice looking gladius. I have considered that one myself. Still got other ones I want in line ahead of it tho. Ha.

Thanks very much for the valueable info link, Ric. From what I gather from it, this early Hanwei Roman model I own seems a fraction narrower than what it's suppose to be Am curious to confirm if Hanwei did widen the blade for their later Roman production swords.. Anyone??

From what I've read a Gladius should be about 2" in width at its widest, which in the case of a Mainz style would be at the shoulder and possibly reaching this width again toward the end just prior to diving to its tip. The Mainz was the older style of Gladius. Your 2.5" Gladius is a big larger than those uncovered in historical escavations.

I'm not a great specialist of the roman swords, but i know some historical leaf bladed celtic swords of the same period more thinner than this sword. I know too than the roman legions have a great diversity of gladius models, due to the fact they make them in differents sword factory, with inspirations of local peoples style. In an historical point of view, this thinner kind of blade existence is not impossible. Concerning this sword, i'm very curious to know more... I see it's a very light sword, but have it a great handle and cut hability ? Is it fast ? Ah, an other question, is the price justified (in cumparison with gen2 gladii for example) ? Thanks Larry, and congratuation for your new aquisition, for me it look beautiful and it can be an option for my next sword buying...

Oops.. I forgot to bookmark this thread and am not aware that there are new postings. Thousands apologies! -> Needles, thanks for your feedbacks on the probable dimensions. -> Jpfranco, Sylvian, I am struggling with work committment lately and just couldn't set aside time to work on any reviews (this sword & the few others that arrived recently). Sorry. Some quick comments, though: this sword handles very well, is light & very quick even in my unskilled hand. The blade is solid stiff & is flatten diamond in cross-section. and it came with the standard Hanwei sharpness - ie. kinda sharp but not razor-sharp. Hope this helps. I bought this from LeesArmoury Treasures section for around 160USD. Definitely a steal! I've not handled the Gen2 gladii so I'm unable to compare.. Sorry

Thanks Larry ! I have seen this gladius at 269,95$ in kultofathena.com, 240$ in the blowout section. In the same website, the gen2 gladii are at 189$, with free shipping. That made me think twice...

Personally, I value authenticity of the sword form more than its construction, so I'm not a Gen2 fan (sorry to Clyde & the rest of Gen2 ardent fans here).. yet

Yes, the sword form is important. I found the look of this sword so great !! When i say that made me think twice, it's because i have read some bad things about the hanwei gladius here : www.larp.com/legioxx/bad.html. But i'm very attired by this sword, and i am very curious to know more about it...

Hey Larry, are you saying it was working before and has switched off? It could be a glitch, best thing to do - go to your profile, click on 'bookmarks' and then update your preferences. See how that goes and if no luck let me know and I'll see what we can do. Cheers, - Paul

I've just checked out the URL you attached, and it seems the author is pretty much 'anti-everybody'. Ha. Going by his/her standards, we'll all have to purchase high-end stuffs, it seems.. Nay.. I could live with a few 'discrepancies' as long the general look is authentic enough Thanks, Sylvain.

Mmmh, in fact the hanwei gladius blade look very similar with the gladius hispaniensis reproduction made by Mark Morrow. It's the first gladius on the left : www.larp.com/legioxx/gladii3.jpgThe Morrow's gladius is copied from a blade found in Slovenia, in the Smihel site, dating to year 175 BC. The Morrow's blade is 26" long and 2" wide, and weighs about 1 pound 10 ounces. I have found this informations in the larp website. Yes Larry, the Hanwei gladius blade width seems to be historically right
