I'm very interested to buy a Gen2 gladius, but I hesitate between Pompeii and Mainz type. I see i'm not alone to have some indecision about this choice ;D They are made in the same way, but technically : Is the Mainz a better cutter with the heavyer and larger blade ? Is the Pompeii better for fighting technics with the thiner and lighter blade ? Thanks

sylvain, I'd go with the Mainz. I've got a Pompeii and it's a great blade, tho I think the Mainz blade would make a better cutter. I don't think you can go wrong with either. LOL, I guess I wasn't much help. ;D

The Pompeii handled an aluminum coffee can just fine, but the leaf-shaped blade on the Maintz looks pretty cool. A matter of aesthetic preference, in my opinion. All Gen2's seem to be excellent cutters.
Just from experience with the Pompeii, it's light, fast, well balanced, and cuts like a son of a semprini. You can't go wrong with that.

Leaf blades are sexy. Something feminine in the shape maybe? They look 'special'

FYI in case anyone's interested... I should have a Gen2 Maintz next week sometime for review. I am planning a standard review of it, then a side-by-side comparison of the Maintz and the Pompeii. I hope to have them written and posted in about 2-3 weeks if anyone wants to see the outcome before making a buying decision...

Great ! I had now more time for taking decision Concerning the short swords of antic period, an other interessant option is the Celtic sword of Kris Cutlery. I have read in the review of this sword than characteristics are quite similar with Gen2. Is that true ?

I have the Kris Cutlery Celtic and it is a fine well made sword, just loves to cut. Definitly on par with Gen2 quality wise. In fact here a video of it in action. ;D I also have the Kris Cutlery Gladius, another fine blade and even tho you didn't ask here's a link to the review. Forgive the obvious self promotion. /index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=1186875060 The gladii mentioned here are all fine cutters, but the KC Celtic is far and away a better cutter than the Gen2 or KC pompeii in my experience. I have not handled the mainz, but am interested to know if it cuts well because of the shape of the blade. Best of luck on your decision making, I always find it a very enjoyable part of aquiring a new toy.

Yes, I agree the shape of the blade makes it cut well. I await Mikes review of the Mainz. Although Paul already did one on the main site. www.sword-buyers-guide.com/roman-swords.htmlI think the newer model has a more oblong shaped guard and pommel, shouldn't change the performance.

Sorry to inform, but my review of the Gen2 Maintz has kind of gotten "financially sidetracked" if you know what I mean. That super-good deal on the AT/CF custom 1426 pretty much consumed my sword funds for the next month or two. And now that damned Paul and Daniel go and publish great stuff about Darksword, making me think that's where I may look for the next sword...I'M SOOO CONFUSED!!!

That gladius is definately on my short list. I need to get back to gladii before I get turned.

Personnally, I've take the decision to buy the KC Celtic, I like it so much ! Your video definitively convince me. And with the today's euro/usdollar change rate, it's time for me to do it now... Maybe when you received the Maintz can you tell us a little post about Maintz vs Celtic too ?

sylvain, the KC Celtic is a great choice, imo. I loaded mine to a friend and he liked it so much he ordered him one also. It's alot of fun to cut with, and very sturdy construction. Might be a while on the mainz as I have purchased a couple blades already in recent months, but I definately see it in my future.
