Hello I am new to sword collecting and as you will soon figure out I am specifically interested in ancient Greek/roman swords. That being said I recently received the Greek Hoplite Sword by Windlass from Kult of Athena I believe there is a picture of it on another thread with a similar name in this section, it has a dark wood handle and a central rib down the middle, anyway I am just asking for in info on its historical accuracy as well as any general info that anyone here who has wielded this sword or has more knowledge of these swords than I, which obviously isn't much. One last thing I have noticed is that as far as the swords I own or have handled is that this model seems to be very rigid, is it meant to be that way with the midrib down the center or is it a sign of poor quality
P.S. I am also interested and trying to find any info on the Spartan Lakonian also by Windlass, I have read the review on this site and found it useful, but outside of that source there is no info as most resources say there are no finds to compare it to

The Hoplite blade, being 24" long and having that strong central rib, should be stiff as a board. Swords older than the Middle Ages aren't really my "area", but I believe the original versions of this type of sword probably had bronze blades, which, if bent, would stay that way, so the central rib was used to help prevent this by making the blade very rigid. In all, Windlass makes a very decent blade, regardless of style. I'd like to see some refinement of their hilt components and fitting, but their blades are very tough. As to the Lakonian, I can't offer any additional info (sorry), but I hope somebody else can shed some light on it for both of us. That's one of the few non-Medieval/Renaissance swords I find myself really interested in. It just looks "right".

Tsafa, check out this link from the thread on myArmoury that Rammstein linked to: www.bronzeagefoundry.com/. They sell a bronze leaf blade for about $110 USD. Click on the Tools & Weapons link and it's the first blade listed. It would be a reasonably simple process to attach your own wood grip if you have access to some basic tools.

kriegschwert I appreciate, very much, you sharing the knowledge that you have on this sword, and it is a shame that no one seems to have anything on the spartan sword, but then again this thread has only been up a couple of days. Rammstein I appreciate your effort to respond and I am aware of that thread, you're right they can be a bit harsh, while they do mention the greek hoplite sword and its slight improvements and historical inaccuracies over the classic hoplite they mainly are discussing the classic hoplite sword. tsafa, I also want to thank you for your input, and I am aware of that particular site and I do plan to do business with him in the near future, right now I am just trying to get as much info and opimions on the Greek Hoplite sword, as well as anything on the Spartan Lakonian. Which by the way I did find this, www.eclectichistorian.net/Roman/ about midway down the page there is a picture of a short sword, beside a pugio dagger, called The Atienza-type sword, but other than the picture and the name there is no other information, but as you can see it closely resembles, though not exactly, the Spartan short sword by Windlass, hopefully someone who reads this will have additional info on the Atienza-type, the spartan lakonian, or the Greek Hoplite sword. Once again I thank you all for your responses thus far and those to come. JDS JR.

I might just order that.
