Like the title says, has anyone here ever took an off the shelf mail shirt and spot welded it before to make it as strong as riveted? I just recently bought a Get Dressed for Battle Mail shirt that was butted and I already had some rings break off whilst putting it on for the first time. It is zinc plated and I understand I have to remove the zinc plating before attempting this as heating zinc plating is very toxic and bad for your health. Anyone ever tried this before?

With the zinc plating I will say no, it will be cheeper to buy riveted Mail.....
You would have to put the shirt in a very hot fire or use a Map gas torch and flash off the zinc, you could take it to a crome plating shop and have them strip the zinc.....
Good luck.......

I concur with SanMarc.....Leave the butted GDFB alone and get a good riveted set. Besides, you already know that burning that zinc puts off VERY TOXIC fumes. Even if it were unplated, unless you welded it yourself, the cost of having a pro welder do it would be outrageous. That cost alone would get you a killer set of riveted maille. Best............Pict

Addendum to my last post: .......IF you could FIND a pro welder to do it. Ive been a welder for over 20 years, and I wouldn't do it for less than a nickel a ring. Gas, wire, and electricity are NOT cheap.............Pict

Ah I was hoping to do it all myself by buying a cheap spot welder. Well all right.

Nope....I say don't even THINK about trying it. I have no doubts that you COULD do it yourself, but that zinc would be a mother to get off. I've heard of, and seen, horror stories about people inhaling zinc smoke. It's baaaad s**t. Don't go there.......Pict

Nickle a ring...let's go conservative and say it's 25,000 rings. That'd be...$1250.
Yeah, even a riveted full-sleeved knee length hauberk would be cheaper.
So random question...other than GDFB, who makes affordable riveted maille that's sparring-grade?
