Hey everyone! I've been around here a while looking at reviews, checking out custom projects, browsing the classifieds when I'm broke dreaming about getting more swords. You know, that kinda thing. Anyway, I figured I would drop by with an introduction before I start posting elsewhere.
As for the swords I have, I have a Kris Cutlery 29 inch 1095 bare blade I got some fitting for and put together. It got a chip in the blade one day though and snapped because I didn't fix it. I was a fool and hitting a stump very lightly (luckily, and I really do mean very lightly) and about 13 inches of the tip broke off, flew back and hit me point first dead on in the chest. I was lucky because since I was hitting it lightly and had a heavy coat on I didn't get hurt. It turned out to be a huge safety lesson for me, and I often wonder not only if the reason it flew back as hard as it did was because being DH it had so much pressure built up, but also what might have happened if I had hit it harder. We were in the mountains, so I'm not sure I'd have much of a chance. Anyway, I did learn some lessons, and got a sick tanto blade, so I can't complain.
The second sword I got was a zetsurin, not much to say about that, mostly got it to gauge the size of the kozuka as a base for when I start making them, since it was cheaper then a real one haha
After that, a friend and I went in on some blades from Sinosword, his was pretty nice, the bamboo tsuba was really nice and I regret not getting one, but the fittings were kinda loose, awesome blade though. I, trying to get something different (what a fool I was for following my own path!), tried to get a custom shikomizue (or whatever they are), and while the blade was great and I have nothing bad to say about t-10 at all, everything else on the sword was a disaster, and I only try to forget about it.
After that I decided to take another risk on some jians from a chinese ebay seller, the fittings on both are for the most part garbage, but the blade on one seems to be a san mai lamination with pattern welded sides. At least that is to say most of the edge steel seems to be one kind except towards the back. The tang is really rough on it though, but I think with some shortening it could be salvaged. The other one, which I thought might have a hamon, seems to just have been VERY DEEPLY etched to look like it did, but it is thicker then any other blade I have, so maybe if I can figure out the steel it can be put to use also.
Anyway, enough rambling, I'm going to take some pictures of these jian blades to post and get some ideas on trying to improve upon it. Good day to all of you!
