Hello everyone. I think that you have all noticed that we have been having a few problems with the forum lately. Basically to improve it permanently , we are going to have to migrate the boards to a new host. This will be expensive.
Paul and I were working on a project that if it goes well should help pay for the move... but things have gotten so bad, that there is no time to wait . As such , Paul will be bearing the brunt of the cost and paying up front, and hoping to recoup losses on the project.
Many of you have offered to help / donate. While this is really kind of you , Paul has decided not to take donations.
So what can you do?
Well , if all goes as planned, very soon we should have some SBG Tshirts. The sell of these will go to help cover expenses of moving the forum, and other planned upgrades.
I have no idea what they will cost... it is for Paul to decide... but probably $30 and some change...
So anyone who wants to donate to the new hosting service move, and is able to do so, buy a tshirt when they materialize.
Anyone game?

I could manage that. I go through a lot of t-shirts in the shop.

I'll buy a shirt or two even though I don't wear tee shirts. However, I'd rather you just accept donations toward the upkeep of the forum.

How about a tee shirt design contest? No prize and in fact the designs are just for display here in the SBG Forum, actual tee shirt design is still whatever Paul comes up with.

That`s a good idea. But still a donation link would do great. I ran a guild in world of warcraft game for 5 years and my forum hosting fee was completely paid by guildies little donations.

My budget is really tight, and I'd have to wait until after Christmas, but I'd be glad to buy a shirt.

I've been lurking here for a while, and y'all have provided an amazing resource that's been an invaluable part of my research. My brother and I have already placed an order for a couple of swords and it would be my honor to give something back to the community. You can count on our support in this endeavor.

A proposal regarding tee shirt design contest. Solicit designs appropriate to differing categories of sword interest. Some here will prefer medieval European swords, there are some who are fans of Viking swords (I lived on and off for 18 years in Copenhagen and have crawled through almost every museum in Denmark marveling over the stuff from what's called the Viking Age), some obviously prefer Japanese katana (or modern Chinese copies) & there are obviously aficionados of traditional Chinese martial arts swords... oh and Zombie Apocalypse swords too, I guess. Personally, I want to start collecting repro tsuba(s) & own one decent "cutter" katana.
I guess some here would be interested in "being" a Viking or a Samurai or a Chinese warlord or a European knight... but the sword has to be central to the design. Designs should be consistent with a 2 or 4 color print/silkscreen process
Publish all entries in a sticky topic so people can see them. Choose the best overall for use on the SBG Forum tee shirt. The winner (Best Over All) gets the some kind of prize or special recognition, maybe the top choices for various categories get a free tee shirt... every contestant gets bragging rights. Blatant copyright issues should be discouraged or ineligible to win but still published on the SBG Forum for bragging rights only. There are probably some talented graphic artists here but probably most members will be limited to a bit of copy 'n paste type art. BTW, all the really good old samurai wood prints are in the public domain, Samurai Jack, Samurai Champloo, Afro Samurai & Young Samurai (Jack Fletcher) are not. Similar applies to European sword art. Safe bet is that if an original artwork is more than a hundred years old, it's now in the public domain & copyright is not an issue.

Another obvious idea would be to create some different designs. Starting with like 4 of them, see which sells best and expand the collection.
We could indeed have some Viking design, Japanese, Chinese, Medieval... for starters. Then move on.
I mean why would I buy more than two if they are the same (the only reason beeing just to support SBG)? While if they are neat and like 4 different designs, I'd likely buy 4 and both sides would be happy.
I'm not trying to suggest SBG should turn to a shop, but I bet it would be nice to have more or less constant income - just in case.

I think multiple designs is a nifty concept. You have to keep in mind however that tee shirt printers normally have minimum orders, usually multiples of 12 per each design. Each additional ink color incurs an additional fee. There is a setup charge for the artwork, this is usually a one time fee per design. Then there is the cost of the shirt to be printed, this can vary from about $6 (U.S.) per shirt with a minimum of 12 shirts + print cost per shirt + initial design setup fee. About the least you can get away with for a first order would be about $72 for the shirts, $15 - $40 initial setup fee, $15 - $25 additional per color (requires separate screen for each color) + $2 or so per shirt per printed. So a two color (ink) design would be about $155 for the first 12 tee shirts. Of course, each additional 12 shirts would be only about $96 per 12. ($72 shirt cost + $24 print cost) Now you see why decent tee shirts cost $20 each retail. For example, Genuine Harley-Davidson Motorcycle tee shirts sell for a minimum of $25 each at the Harley-Davidson Museum and I pulled the numbers above from the people who print the H-D tee shirts here in Milwaukee. Men's Knee Deep in Iron Short Sleeve Tee $32 at your local Harly shop.
