my new hauwei shinogi-zukuri
this is the specifications i ordered for
t8/9260 in maru, 12" handle, 26.5" blade
SHINOGI-ZUKURI with geometric YOKOTE and midare gunome
FULL RATTAN WRAPED SAYA
Very tightly alternate & HISHI-GAMI TSUKAMAKI
HAZUYA FINISH/polish
this is the first time i have dealt with hauwei and i have mixed review. i dont work for them and i originally paid full price but had some $$$ refunded due to time it took to complete and the mixup(mainly my part) on hamon.
the original price was 380 delivered, but ended up being 300
i havent owned many swords, but have held a few and know the feel of good steel. this sword feels good in hand and very stout for the size. it feels of a good extension of my arm.
at first the communication was good, fast emails back and fourth with good explanation on most things, but i didnt want much complicated things. i was told it would take 35 days to complete. about 2 weeks later i asked if they could make a 5.5" bladed knife to match my sword in blade material and handle/style of fittings. it was ok'ed. 2-3 weeks later about the time everything was to be due, i didnt hear word back, i saw post in many places stating they are on new year holiday for the entire week so you really cant get much done. a week later they got back to me and said sword is almost done 1 week. i messaged them back a week later and didnt hear back for 2 weeks or around there. they finally messaged me and said they couldnt make knife and refunded the knife money and stated another week for my sword. a few weeks later i messaged back to see when shipping was and no word for another week. finally got back and they said they didnt have fittings i wanted. at that point i was starting to get real upset/mad at the situation, the time it has taking and they dont even have fittings. i go back and fourth on what i want to do, keep bare blade, get Shirasaya, change fittings, get full refund, get part refund. at first i said i think i want a full refund and they said they will have fittings in about 2-3 days and they will give a $80 refund and keep sword with fittings i wanted. i decided to go with that and finally about 10 days later the sword shipped about 60 days late. it was shipped that friday and it arrived tuesday evening. i was shocked on how fast it came from the other side of the world. hell ups and fedex are regularly longer from cali or ny.
i get the sword in and it was packaged good. in a styrofoam package tightly packaged with yellow tape all way around. in sword bag with the handle shrink wrapped with plastic and the blade was full of oil and also with a layer of plastic on it.
when looking at saya and everything i noticed i got Buffalo horn kojiri, koiguchi and kurikata. these really help make the sword and saya look good with the rattan wrap. from the pic i ordered from the fittings were more black and they came in more brown. i think the brown looks great. the hamon came with more of a ko gunome over the midaire gunome, but it wasnt much of a deal breaker.
i havnt cut anything with it yet and my technique isnt the best but im sure it can cut good and will be fun
i havnt put a tape measure on to see if dimensions are correct on how i ordered, but it seems right and feels right in hand. the point of balance seems to be around 3.5-4" and has a great feel to it.
for pure blade and funds it cost, i would get another blade from them. the part lack of communication after i paid and the time it took to finish, i might not. its a toss up. but a great product in the long run of things.
enjoy the pics
