Hey Guys, I recently started a thread about choosing between a Bowie Knife, or a Kukri. It was suggested that I can also have a custom blade designed, so then I hopped into illustrator and came up with this: I know jack about designing blades with structural integrity in mind. With that said, based off this design, are there any spots that seem as if they would fail due to the overall design? The grip will be wood panels, so the blade runs all the way down from top to bottom.

Hey I made a knife with a blade curve like that too! But I added a few other curves to go with it...LOL Attachments:

I don't see any structural flaws in that, and it actually looks a bit like some of the stuff that Fallen has produced, so I'm pretty sure he could do it for you if need be. Actually looks a bit like chrisperoni's Bolo Brushknife Zombie Slayer. forum.sword-buyers-guide.com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=13852

structurally theres nothing wrong with it, on the contrary, full tang with pannels is IMHO the MOST solid method possible.

The for the feedback guys. Basically I wanted to combine a bowie and kukri . This is just concept for now, but I might just price around some of the guys that do custom work and see where I go from there.

Good looking design. One thing though, make sure the upper guard angle is rounded, in your drawing it looks quite angular, creating a possible breaking point. A small radius will suffice, no need to change the form to a circle.

The only thing I would suggest is to make the overall line of the blade and grip one single curve. Not sure if I can explain it, but essentially, if you drew lines through more or less the center of your blade and your grip, they would make two curves intersecting at the guard. This is not necessarily bad-- it would probably handle just fine-- but if you dropped the grip a little bit, it would line up better with the imaginary line of your blade. This will help the chopping ability of your knife much more, and also thrusting as well, as you will be able to know where your tip is much more instinctively.

Been playing around with the design a bit:

Yeah, that's it!! The strong forward curve will make for a wicked chopper!! Thrusting ability will suffer considerably due to the point being so far off line but it'll still get the job done. And cutting wise this will blow any bowie out of the water.

The only thing I might do now is clean up the spine of the blade a little, it looks a little bit funny (for lack of a better word) to me. I think it's the angles... make it a single curve and it would look better. What can I say, I was an aspiring arts major back in the day, I think I have an eye for aesthetics

Way ahead of you lol! I prefer my women with some belly though, or just thick throughout Lol well I am an Arts Major (Digital Design and Multimedia), I see what you mean though. I'm still playing around with the spine a bit, but I'm trying to find that fine balance between functionality and and aesthetics. I want something that stands out a bit, so I'm still at the drawing board a bit lol.
