Hi folks, I'm back with another of my video sword reviews. This time it is the LOTR Ranger Sword from Darksword Armory. My review and testing of the Ranger sword from Darksword Armory. This is a fully functional rendition of the sword carried by Strider in the Lord of the Rings movies. Blade: 1060 High Carbon Steel Tempered to a Rockwell of 53 Total length: 46" Blade length: 36" Weight: 5 lbs. 5 oz. POB: 3" This is a full-tang sword featuring a wood-core hilt which is cord-wrapped and then covered with stitched leather. The scabbard has a wooden core, stitched leather, steel chape and versatile leather suspension belt. Swords from Darksword Armory are available either sharpened or as a blunt version suitable for film, stage and LARP. Check out this and other great hand-crafted swords at www.darksword-armory.comAs heavy use of any sword will result in eventual loosening of the hilt via wear, wood core compression, etc. it should be noted that a repeening of the tang was required to tighten up the hilt of this sword after the tree cutting test. NOTE: Destructive testing of a sword is very dangerous. Do not try this yourself.

You're the first one that's made a review of this and hasn't said that it is a "tank". Plus karma for that!

Thanks everyone. Ya, I really like this sword and as I stated in the video, it doesn't feel as heavy as it is.

Damn Morpheus I just ended my long work day at my office to your killer vid. I own this sword and agree 100% with your review. I'm in the process of customizing mine with art and antiquing the furniture and blade. Even with its heft and presence it does move alot more gracefully than one might think thx again for the review.

I've cut extensively with my Albions and free play with steel swords and have never had to re-peen any of them. The only sword that needed re-pening after use was the Hanwei Practical Bastard. I'd recommend taking the grip off, peening the pommel, and making a slightly shorter grip core. Compression fit sword do tend to come loose, at least that's been my experience.

Seriously Mike, don't want to start a debate here, but you weren't slamming your Albions through cinder blocks into an anvil!
Price difference between a DSA and an Albion? What, about 2x the price! That's without the scabbard too. What would a scabbard cost for the Albion? About the price of a DSA sword! ... enough said.
Let's keep the comparisons reasonable and not derail the topic into a "my Albion swords are better than DSA swords" for goodness sake! Thanks

Blackthorn, his comment had nothing to do with price. He was simply remarking that a different method of construction would alleviate the issue of having to repeen the sword (that it is an issue of compression-fit swords, not all swords). His post was illustrating an example of how to fix Morpheus' issue with the hilt coming loose, not to simply brag that Albions are better...There was no need to be snappy.

I wasn't sure where he was going with the opening remark, heard it all before, didn't want this thread to degenarate into something non-constructive and get locked... If the comment is only what you say it is, no problem, that's cool then!

Greybeard had an older version of the DSA Ranger sword before they started to peen and thread them. There was a period when they were only threaded. From my understanding on the Ranger the grip core is solid mild steel which is why the pob is so close to hilt and why they are so damn heavy. if Eyal is out there, if they'd make a new production run with a wooden grip core and got the blade weight down to four to four and half pounds I'd buy one because I love the Ranger sword but five and a half pounds is a deal breaker for me. This would also move the point of balance forward to about five and a half inches or so which is where it should be anyway on a sword of this type, not three inches. Nice video Morpheus. Del Tins do sometimes need repeening I've never had to repeen a Darksword. Morpheus, if you really want a good DSA, buy the their Messer. You won't be disappointed, I know I love mine.

DSA just posted a video on youtube a day or two ago where they are doing a 'resistance test' one of their blades. He is actually chopping a concrete block to pieces with it. You can see the blade flexing as it strikes, yet the blade is taking no visible damage ( although up close the edge is probably quite beat up). It's pretty damn impressive.

I've had so many comments on this video about the weight of this sword, but I would classify it as a two-hander so it really isn't that far out. I am going to do another handling/cutting video with it this week to try to show that it handles quite well for the weight.

Blackthorn... Mike was resounding to the statement that "any" swords hilt will come lose over time... Long term steel on steel sparing puts massive and repeated strain on a sword... If his hilts did not come lose after that sort of abuse, it's very worth while info in regards to the tatement of ny sword coming lose.

I like the looks of the sword even though the blade has little taper.
Weight of the sword is all over the place:
DSA Site: 5 lbs. 5 oz SBG Store: 6 lbs. 2 oz KOA: 5 lbs. 14.2 oz
