I'm not an expert, but I belive by adding wieght and substance... and also curve... to the CoP they are VERY good cutters. Also... they look damn cool. ;D I believe that's exactly it, Sean. The curve helps the cut, as well as the extra metal so far forward (in the CoP) lending more weight to the cut.

Buffjrod, I have four or five leafblades, depending on if you count the pugio. There is a notable improvement in the cut compared to my similarly sized straight bladed weapons. I agree with Aaron and Sean.

on leaf blades, they are a pretty old style if I recall correctly. so historically speaking weren't they primarily made from Bronze (since that's when they were popular) and not so often of iron/steel? if I am correct in this, why did they fall out of favor? it seems to me that a well made leaf blade would not only be a better cutter than a straight sided blade of similar size but it would thrust better than many of the early dedicated cut swords like a type X. so if it was so much better why didn't the leaf blade stick around?
or did it and I just don't know?

There is an excellent thread here about the history of leafblades and speculations as to why they may have fell from grace....
