After experiencing the French Mameluke I've been seriously considering getting a spadroon. Statwise, it looks like an ideal sword for me. (The saber being just a tad too heavy.)

Hello, I'm a stage fencer and a movie prop replica collector. About The Mark of Zorro (1940), Tyrone Power in the final duel against Basil Rathbone's character used a typical configuration of stage sword. That is comprised of a sabre hilt on an epee blade. It was the thing to do in the 1940's and 50's and today we see a return to it more and more on stages all over the world. In this case the blade is clearly an epee blade and the hilt seems to be of the parise type. I have found three such swords and bought them. All three are different so I presume they are NOT made by the same manufacturer.
Last week, on two of them I replaced the blades with epee blades. If the blades do well in fencing sessions, I will replace all of my sabre blades with epee blades. However ... Earlier in the movie we see Zorro using the same kind of sword but with some slots in the hilt. My question is, did such hilts exist or were the slots cut out of the regular hilts by the prop department of the movie studio? I'm considering having the slots cut out of one of mine (the one in the worst condition) unless I could find a hilt just like it. Can anyone help me? One more thing, the Guy Williams Zorro sword was also an epee blade mounted on a sabre hilt. This time the hilt was a Hungarian type hilt, and according to Guy Williams Jr it was made by Negrini. Today a company called Zen Warrior Armory makes a "Catalano" hilt, which they sell as "an exact replica of the Guy Williams sabre hilt", yet they did not make the Hungarian, but the British type in the picture above.

Hm, I'm waiting for a backordered Windlass Patton Sword. I see some similarities, probably a heavier blade, but the bowl guard, saber grip an a straight thrust and cut blade. I'll try to scratch an A in a wall when I finally got it. At least I know now what the Patton always reminded me of.

Cool to see another stage fencer on the forum, not that many of us. I was under the assumption that Guy Williams' hilt looked exactly like the Catalano listed by ZWA. I'll have to check some footage and materials from the show myself. In case you're interested I've also located a Viennese hilt that resembles Basil Rathbone's from The Mark of Zorro with Tyrone Power. Also, what epee blades do you use? I've had good luck with Blue Gauntlet blades, though they need significant de burring upon purchase.

They have clearly based their hilt on the British model, not the Hungarian model. My first priority is a Williams model. The Rathbone model can wait. I've only last week installed the epee blades. Haven't taken the swords out to go fencing yet. But they look solid and stiff enough. Can't wait to fence with them. It's these blades I bought: shop.pbtfencing.com/product/non-electric-epee-blade-stm-pbt-x3p244x2o214s2u2x2x254r2q2z2o2l3

In your second picture there is the Masiello sword. Italian design. Doesn't that one come close? Thank you for replying. But no, it doesn't come close. It doesn't have that rolled part.
