I have a sword that my father in law picked up off of a dead communist officer (Major--he also brought home the shoulder boards) at Inchon during the Korean War. The blade is 22" long, has a decidedly oriental curve and tip, but the handle is Western in appearance, very similar to Civil War officer sword handles. It has no knuckle guard and has a steel scabbard which is missing some pieces. It has seen some severe use, but is sound. There is writing on the top of the scabbard that looks Korean, but may be Chinese? See attached photos. If anyone has any idea what this sword is, age and possible lineage, I would be grateful. I have been trying for years to identify it. :geek: :?

Hi there,
This looks to be a Japanese police sword. I quite like them as sometimes they very rarely are fitted with wakizashi blades.

Thank you for identifying this sword. I would not have had a clue as to where to look. So it is a Japanese Police sword. Since the Japanese occupied Korea for a number of years would explain how it would show up in the Korean War. I saw a few very fine examples online and some were the spitting image of this sword. Sorry, but the sword is not for sale. It is considered an heirloom because my wife's father (and my children's grandpa) brought it home from the war. I would like to preserve/restore it so that it will remain sound and be taken care of as it is passed to the next generation. The scabbard is missing the koiguchi (there are two mounting holes on the scabbard) Do you (or anyone out there) have a recommendation as to where I can find this part? Also, the blade has a considerable amount of crazing/pitting. I know that I cannot remove it, but I would like to clean off the corrosion and stop it from being further damaged by the oiled wood in the scabbard. Any suggestions? :?:

This seems to be 2nd pattern of Japanese police sword. That emblem on top of the handle is police emblem. To my understanding the vast majority of these will have machine made blades (like Will said, I just said same thing with different words ). I also believe that these are not very common items, I don't mean very rare, but just that these aren't around everywhere. My guess would be that finding parts to these would be really hard. Don't know if the blades were made to same specs and you could replace the scabbard with a new one if you'd manage to find one. I don't know much about the military sword stuff, but I can check Fuller & Gregory for more information on these when I get home.
