Hello all, Someone I work with is looking to get her two sons longbows and asked me for advice. The boys are around 17 give or take. I know more about recurves and compounds so while I search/learn about longbows online myself I thought I might pose the question here. Her sons use compounds right now and have several years experience (not beginners to bows in general). Her price range is fairly open- she offered between $250 - $500.
Any advice, suggestions, specific bows and/or makers would be a great help. Thank you.

I am always a fan of Whipperwhil Archery. Custom bows from a variety of materials for $200-$250, typically. Weights over 100#, horn tips, and yew are extra. I have a pair of orange osage bows and a mulberry bow from him. Might take a minute for the bows to be completed, as with any of the custom sword makers here, for the same reasons. These are selfbows with Flemish Strings. www.facebook.com/pages/Whipperwi ... 7658044258 Compound bows are just low velocity rifles that throw very large caliber rounds.

I think she's figuring for a christmas gift - would that be too short a timeframe for 2 customs?

I don't know. Probably. You'd have to ask him. 5 years ago, when I got my first bow from him, this was his busy time because he had his shop set up on the PA Renne Faire grounds and this is when that Faire is on. Now the whole year is busy time for him.

Can't recommend Rudderbows enough. Some people have given Jim crap in the past, but I have never had any problems. Good prices and excellent craftsmanship. I've purchased two bows from him now (and English longbow and my Assyrian chariot bow).

I would have to agree with Aaron, can't go wrong with a rudderbow, Great quality, many many options, prices vairy. although it depends what they have on hand, & what you want to spend, target grades up to & beyond hunting grade. i had a 5 week wait for mine, i own bamboo backed, it appears their site is under construction currently Also there is this guy Kp archery hes an ebay seller, stores.ebay.com/kparchery dont be fooled by his lower price i bought my first longbow from him '58' Hickory #45 pull @28' draw, like $50, gets it to your door within 10 days, the wife & i have shot them side by side, and in truth the longbow from Kp is a great bow, made well, and shoots true, flemish string etc,i have no complaints especially for the price. if you msg him he makes any lb pull ,your specs etc & with or without a natural carved in arrow shelf. if i remember Aaron also got arrows from rudderbow, i got mine from here : stores.ebay.com/Pandoras-pal-Archery-Productspretty good pricing, they work well have had no issues, traditional wood arrows.

I purchased my hunting arrows from Rudderbows with my latest bow, since they had the best deal for the options I wanted (helical twist, shield cut, self nocks, and trade points installed). When I have the money, I'm picking up a dozen target arrows from here: www.dmerrill.com/store/index.php ... roductId=5 I have yet to find any place with a better deal for target arrows, let alone with the options they provide. I've seen a number of reviews of their product, all of them favorable.

I've got a PSE Heritage series Sequoia, it's quite nice and in your price range. I've heard good things about the Legacy as well.

If they haven't made a choice already, I'm about to put a custom made selfbow up for sale. Orange osage, 50#, with arrows and a stringer for $300.

More for supplies but they do sell long bows as well, 3rivers archery is where I get 95% of all my bow and arrow making supplies, they do have some real nice bows although i think the only one under 500 is www.3riversarchery.com/product.asp?i=20931Xand as for the Rudderbows suggestions, I don't have personal experience with them but I can +1 them from what I've heard. I think they are actually retail partners with 3 rivers as well.

Bill (Whipperwil) is a great guy who makes very nice bows. Rudderbows is good as well but seems to be tits up at the moment.

Nothing against Rudderbows, or any other smaller/custom maker. But I've been a Fred Bear man for nearly 40 years now, "production" maker or no. If I were looking in this price range it'd be a Montana.

I have a Rudder English Warbow and like it a lot. With the price range you're talking about, that's not only a bow but arrows and a quiver for each. A complete outfit for Christmas, ya can't beat that.

I would say any bow made by Bill Dar. Unfortunatly idk where to get his info and or what his markiting name is. I've only ever dealt with him in person EDIT: LOL. My bad 1hour of sleep for the past 2days stuff like this will happen. Go with Whipperwil. Taran: best place I know to talk to him is the Florida Renaissance Fair(FLARF) I see him every year.

I see him at his home workshop and the PA Renne Faire, down the street from his shop. He used to have a year-round shop on the PA Renne Faire grounds, but closed that up. Don't know why. Whipperwil Archery has a facebook page and you can get his email from it. www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Whippe ... 58?fref=ts He has an actual webpage going now... www.whipperwilarchery.com/
