CUSTOM ATRIM SHORT BROAD SWORD :
Well iv got some time off after my Shoulder Operation ,so iv decided its time to catch up on some reviews iv been meaning to do for a while now . This will be No. 4 of 14 reviews to follow over the next month or so .
Introduction:
Last year Sonny at the Custom Sword Shop had a bunch of Atrim blades just waiting to be turned into swords , there were a couple that caught my eye and in the end I ended up taking 4 of them and had Sonny work his magic on them with full scabbard packages as well . The 4 blades were :
1) 1557
2) Type XVIII
3) Leaf Blade
4) Short Broadsword
A lot of work went into these by Sonny as they all received Custom Hilts ,the blades where all given an even satin polish and full scabbards with artwork were also added .
This will be review No 2 of the 4 Atrims done by Sonny at the CSS .
With this one I basically told Sonny I was looking for something with an integral suspension system ,in antique brown with darker brown center channel with a Lion Passant and Some Crusader crosses embossed in the center channel . The fittings for this blade were a little tricky to choose because I didn’t want the normal wheel pommel , I wanted something different . So in the end we went with the setup in the picture .
I think it turned out rather well overall .
Initial Impressions:
I was not too sure what to expect with this one as I had nothing in my collection with a blade similar to this . At first glance I was really impressed with the package overall ,Sonny did a really good job on the fittings and the scabbard as usual and the whole package together just looks really good . It was however after unsheathing this brute that I really came to appreciate its power . At first I must admit I thought that she was a little heavy ,but this was after handling the 1557 ,so pretty much everything felt heavy after that for a bit . After a couple of minutes of cutting and handling and getting used to her though she really shone and I came to appreciate her as the brute cutter that she is . I was really excited to get some cutting done with this one as this blade just demanded to be put to work .
Statistics:
Overall length: 38.3 inches
Blade length: 30.8 inches
Blade width at cross: 2.6 inches
Grip length: 4.93 inches
Weight: 2.3lb
Blade Material: CNC Milled 5160 High Carbon Spring Steel
Components:
The Blade:
A very nice satin finish to it ,it has a nice broad fuller which helps reduce the weight and for such a small sword has an amazing blade presence about it and a nice broad tip .
The Handle:
This was done to Sonny’s usual high standards with a riser in the middle and ends . I also choose to have the grip tapered down as it reaches the pommel ,something a little different . It worked out surprisingly well and is comfortable in hand .
The Fittings:
I went for a curved guard on this one with a scent stopper pommel ,these were all made from scratch by Sonny .
The Scabbard:
This is another great looking scabbard from Sonny , as usual holding the blade snugly and looking really good . I asked for an antique campaign worn look to it and I think Sonny pulled it all off really well .
Handling Characteristics:
This sword whilst not as agile as my 1557 is fairly responsive with a nice balance and feel to it . One can almost sense on just dry handling that it a powerful cutter .
Cutting:
This is where it really shone , I put this one through its paces using only Mats ,starting on one ,working my way to two and ending up on three . It performed really well and I have no doubt that in true battle this sword would pack a mighty punch in hand .This is a sword that demands to be cut with and shows its true nature when cutting . It is no nimble 1557 ,not by any means ,but I would not want to be on the receiving end of a cut from this one that’s for sure .
I need to get my camera all set up once my shoulder has healed up and then ill see about getting some video of it in action as that is the best way to fully comprehend this sword in action .
Conclusions:
This is a tough little sword that packs an almighty punch when cutting . Not as agile as the 1557 ,but still fairly responsive thanks to the balance of the sword .
Sonny did another great job on this one on a blade style you don’t often see too much of.
Pros:
Great looking scabbard and package
Packs a mean punch whilst cutting , A brute which performs very well on heavy and medium targets
Nicely balanced piece
Very sturdy sword which exudes power
Cons:
The weight does take a little getting used to ,but bearing in mind I say this after handling a 1557
The Bottom Line:
Put it in a nutshell this one is a brute with pure cutting power . A hard hitting sword with good handling . Another great addition to my collection from Sonny over at CSS .
