CUSTOM ATRIM 1557 IN GREEN GOODNESS :
Well iv got some time off after my Shoulder Operation ,so iv decided its time to catch up on some reviews iv been meaning to do for a while now . This will be No. 3 of 14 reviews to follow over the next month or so .
Introduction:
Last year Sonny at the Custom Sword Shop had a bunch of Atrim blades just waiting to be turned into swords , there were a couple that caught my eye and in the end I ended up taking 4 of them and had Sonny work his magic on them with full scabbard packages as well . The 4 blades were :
1) 1557
2) Type XVIII
3) Leaf Blade
4) Short Broadsword
A lot of work went into these by Sonny as they all received Custom Hilts ,the blades where all given an even satin polish and full scabbards with artwork were also added .
On these I gave Sonny a basic idea of what I was thinking and the rest I left up to him ,in the end I was very happy with how they all turned out .
This will be review No 1 of the 4 Atrims done by Sonny at the CSS .
With this one I basically told Sonny I was looking for something really elaborate in terms of the scabbard and grip with a vine type theme and of course in Green  ,the rest I left up to him .
The end product really turned out very well .
Historical overview:
From 1410 to about 1510 the Type XVIII and it's variants were the most popular sword in use all over Europe. At that time wealthy knights and royalty who were armored in extremely advanced plate armor from head to toe which needed an extremely good thrusting point to poke through the gaps and spread the mail links beneath ruled the battlefield as nearly indestructible human tanks, while at the same time the common soldier was often armored in very little. Brigantine or jack-coat of plates and a simple helmet were very common and fighters in these armors could be cut down and killed or disabled more expediently with a cut than a thrust. so a weapon was needed that was good at both cutting and thrusting. from this need the type XVIII was born.
Initial Impressions:
the moment I first picked this sword up I thought this is way too light ,but then I started to swing her around a little and then just realized how deadly a weapon she is ,what she lacks in weight and brute force she makes up for in speed and agility . The sword is beautiful with the unique grip and risers ,beautiful scabbard with embossing and the fittings that just seemed to suit this blade perfectly . Ill be honest , I was hesitant at first with her as I thought that surely she was just too delicate and small a sword to be a serious cutter . She was so fast and nimble in hand and one of the most comfortable single handers iv ever swung because of the very low weight and great balance .
Statistics:
Overall length: 34.75 inches
Blade length: 27 inches
Blade width at cross: 2.2 inches
Grip length: 4.9 inches
Weight: 1 pounds 9 ounce
Components:
The Blade:
The blade is a short Oakeshott Type XVIII, of flattened diamond cross section, and is very similar to the blade of the "Henry V" sword .
It has a very nice even Satin Polish to it and what I did really like about it is just how stiff it is whilst handling .
Sonny also put a really nice edge on it as its very sharp with a nice even edge from what I can see .
The Handle:
Here we did something different , Sonny did a vine type design with the risers on the grip and covered it with Green goodness
This does not only look very good ,but provides a really good grip on the sword
The Fittings (Guard & Pommel):
The fittings were all made from scratch from steel, I'm happy with what Sonny went with as it not only looks good but provided a nice balance to the sword .
The Pommel has a nice etching on it following through the whole theme from the scabbard
The Scabbard :
Sonny really went all out here ,the scabbard is simply stunning ,but rather than try to explain it here are loads of pictures
Handling Characteristics:
Lightning fast are the first words that come to mind. It's so light that at first I didn't notice the balance and you have to keep reminding yourself that you are indeed handling a real live sword and not a toy . The balance is excellent and one can only truly come to appreciate this after doing some cutting . It requires very little effort indeed when handling and handling wise is one of my favourite pieces as this is truly one of those swords you can swing all day long .
Cutting:
It really is a joy to handle in both thrusting and cutting . The cutting performance out of this little sword really surprised me as it really handled light targets with ease and even against Medium and Heavy targets was more than capable and really left me surprised at how it performed as it honestly performed a lot better than I was expecting .
The dreaded Pool Noodles and water Bottles were no problems and she sailed through these with ease . Against Single rolls of Tatami she performed admirably . All in all I was really pleasantly surprised with how she performed . One of the best features though was just how much fun she was whilst cutting ,the great handling and low weight makes a pro longed cutting session a real pleasure .
Conclusions:
A great little sword which is very fast and nimble yet is still able to perform surprisingly well when cutting . This sword is a joy to cut with and handle ,definitely one of my favourite single handers .
Pros:
Very fast with agile handling
Performs way above expectations when cutting
A tough little campaigner who is able to fight way above her league
Really good service and work from Sonny over at the CSS
Oh yes and its Green
Cons:
Personally I have none for this little sword as she really did surprise me .
The Bottom Line:
I love this sword ,from its amazing handling to its cutting performance . Its just a really good all round performer and one of my favorite Atrims .
Sonny did a really great job on this whole package and iv since had many a sword done by Sonny over at the CSS .
