well the windlass heron,im not keen on the hilt furniture or the grip wrap, the blade looks a tad skinny, the brendan hmmmm well i dont like the fact that its not mine, seriously 14th what can i say, there's no comparrison ,putting one of my favourite custom smiths alongside a production blade, all it does is showcase the fable sword and beg me to ask, what time do you go out and what time's good for a bit of international burgulary putting them both together would just make me feel sold short buying the windlass when i know that that beauty is out there

I much prefer Brendan's and the comparison really isn't fair. I just want to show the differences in size, guard styles and how this just fits the sword in the book better. But there is a little coolness factor that the Windlass one is the prototype they sent to Bruce for his approval and that he sharpened. Its neat to be able to say you own the first Warder swords that a customer maker like Brendan did and the prototype of the official one. Since I am a huge fan of the WoT, it gives me some really geeky bragging rights. Now if only I could find the first VA one.....

14th- According to VA's website once their stock on it is done, Odindude and VA are supposed to be tweaking the designs.. you could get the first of VA's version 2? lol

I'm glad I've decided not to get the Windlass one anymore; something about it just looks off in your pictures, 14th. Also, wasn't the Windlass one meant to specifically be the official "Tam al'Thor" sword rather than a Warder sword?

Nope, meant to be the blade Rand did up based on the sword of Laman, former King of Carihein.

Currently no plans on our end for a revised design, so tracking down #1 of design one might be faster. :?

Huh, that notation on the page is gona now too, it was there last month though. How odd.
Or, you can just get a Warder from the Odindude, who kinda brought that to the sword world. A verrimus with the right kind of blade and you're in business!

Hey 14th. Very cool post. Good to see the comparison. They really are apples and oranges. It's cool that even having this blade it didn't confuse your innovation and we were able to come up with something so original away from what's been done before. I notice the Windlass grip doesn't follow the curve of the spine of the blade. For my first couple of single edged curved blades I made the centre line of the grip and tang in line with the centreline of the blade, but it doesn't look right. I learned you have to make the top edge of the tang follow the line of the spine. Looks and feels much better.

No Comparison.

Valiant Armory Warder is pretty much the way to go if you can't afford the custom one.

Windlass have alot of nice swords - mostly their side swords and cut and thrust. The rest are just hit and miss for me

It may seem to be unfair to windlass but it wasn't meant to be. I was wanting to show their interpretation of it as a katana-like sword w/ minor westernized touches as opposed to the Oriental, falchionesque type of blade with a western guard, hilt and pommel. Also the dimensions always seemed to be a bit off, a 6'6" swordsman would be using a longer blade. I always saw it as a Great Sabre of War if there is such a thing instead of a bastardized katana.
The Windlass one, while no match for Brendan's does handle surprisingly well if you are willing to put in some time to sharpen and re-profile the edge geometry. If you are a fan of the books and just want a WoT sword to have for display and occasional handling its not a bad piece.
Brendan's is more what I would consider a master crafted sword that is meant to be a lethal yet elegant blade. Since that isn't really Windlass's niche, I can't really fault them for it. Plus given how much more time, money, research and design went into Heron's Flight, it should blow the production one out of the water. I literally have been designing and refining this sword in my head since I first read the Eye of the World in 1990, so I had 20+ years to plan, tweak, scrap and re-plan all aspects of the sword over and over again before working with Brendan. He was then able to further refine things and make it practical while adding his own unique artistic style to it. Between the time I spent on it over the years and Brendan's artistic and metalworking skills I would expect no less.
At my local fair this past week I had multiple vendors ask me to name my price for the piece. I even could have worked out a trade for an 800 year old Knights Templar sword from the third crusade but turned it down given the importance and personal significance of the blade to me.
If it looks like I was trying to bash windlass, I'm not. Their version is fine for what it is. I just wanted something that took things to the next level or two or three......
